About this audiobook

I hope you don’t find him. And if you do, I hope he’s dead and that he suffered…

Real-estate mogul Martin Cresswell-Smith is the best thing that has ever happened to Ellie. After her daughter’s devastating death, a divorce, and an emotional breakdown, he’s helped her move as far as possible from the grief, the rage, and the monsters of her past. Ellie imagines her new home with Martin in an Australian coastal town will be like living a fairy tale. But behind closed doors is another story—one that ends in Martin’s brutal murder. And Ellie seems almost relieved…

Naturally, everyone thinks Mrs. Cresswell-Smith is guilty.

Senior Constable Lozza Bianchi has reasonable doubt. She sees evidence of a twisted psychological battle and a couple who seemed to bring out the worst in each other—adultery, abuse, betrayal, and revenge. If anything Ellie says can be believed, that is. As the case takes twist after spiraling twist, Lozza can’t shake the gut instinct that she’s being manipulated. That Ellie is hiding something. That there are secrets yet to surface. Lozza has no idea.

Very twisty! I am usually pretty good at figuring out where mystery/thrillers are headed but this one was full of twists and turns.

Heiress Ellie Hartley's life was a mess after her three-year-old daughter died. Her husband divorced her and she had a mental breakdown. Ellie is trying to put her life back together when she meets Real Estate Mogul Martin Cresswell-Smith. Martin sweeps her off her feet. In a matter of weeks, they eloped and Martin moved to Australia where he is working on a huge development project. Ellie has invested in that project and hopes to make it a big success. But when she arrives in Australia a few weeks behind him, she finds that her husband has changed. Martin is no longer the caring, fun-loving guy she met in Canada. In a matter of days, Martin has been murdered, and the police are looking at Ellie as their number one suspect. Ellie has no memory of the night he died but isn't unhappy that he is gone.

This story is told in a couple of different alternating timelines. First Martin's body is discovered by the police and we follow their investigation. Then we backtrack to Ellie's first meeting with Martin and their whirlwind relationship. Finally, we are also following the murder trial in the present day. I made a big assumption at the beginning of the book which threw off my enjoyment of the story. I really didn't like either Ellie or Martin and I have a hard time reading about characters that I don't like. Near the end of the book, there is a big twist that changed my outlook on the whole book. I certainly didn't see it coming. Therefore, it pulled my rating up a couple of points. My rating: is 4 Stars.

This book has so many twists I could barely keep up. Con, on top of con, made this thriller impossible to predict who was doing what. Very suspenseful and good to the last page.
