About this audiobook

From the bestselling author of the Annabelle Schwartzman series comes a chilling story of a woman with a forgotten past and a town with dark secrets.

After surviving a car accident on an icy road in Hagen, North Dakota, Lily Baker regains consciousness with no idea where or who she is. Scattered Bible verses and the image of a man lying in a pool of blood haunt her memory.

The same night of the accident, a young woman is murdered and tossed in a dumpster. Kylie Milliard, Hagen’s only detective, doesn’t immediately recognize the victim, but Kylie soon discovers that Lily and the dead woman share a dark past…if only Lily could remember what it was.

Lily and Kylie both want answers. But Kylie has to play by the book. Lily has to play it safe. And the more Lily learns about her identity, the more she fears the truth.

Had me on edge, lots of twists and well written. Wanted to hear a bit more at the end but overall worth it if you like thrillers

White Out is a suspenseful thriller set in the small town of Hagen, North Dakota. The plot involves several murders, an old kidnapping case, and several characters suffering from amnesia, making the book's first half rather frustrating. The protagonist, Detective Kylie Milliard, is likable, but the author has yet to share much of her personal story. The plot is all over the place, and even though the author did tie most of it up in the end, I still was left with more than a few questions.

Fun, just complex enough to be interesting.

Detective Kylie Miniard is new to town, but she already wants out and I certainly can’t blame her. I think she was only hired because the town needed to meet it’s “women in the department” quota. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next book in the series would have Kylie killing the sheriff, (her boss), who leaves her out of departmental meetings...fails to give her information incoming about the investigation...and other things that she needs to know as an investigator. Above all, to include her as a valued member of the department. That was just my opinion and I’m sure that is not going to be the theme of the next book :) A body has been left in a dumpster and Kylie has been assigned to the case. While she is doing this another event takes place. A woman crawls out of a car with no memory of how she got there or who she is. Most of the book focuses on the living woman and the man she left in the car. This is where the plots become a bit muddled. Too many characters are brought in without any rhyme or reason. Later in the book we discover that it really does make some sort of sense...but why too much time has elapsed and I had pretty much lost interest in any of it. I gave it 2.5 stars for the idea of the plot...not the execution.

No bad; a little convoluted at the end, imo.

What I learned from this book: I do not want to live in or visit North Dakota in the winter.White Out immerses us in atmosphere that had me chilled while sitting here reading on a 90 degree day. I enjoyed spending time with the characters in this icy, snow-covered small town, but I was grateful to put down the book and see green grass and sunshine. The plot is complex, unfolding at a good pace and keeping me on edge. Aspects of the plot might've been a bit of a stretch in plausibility, but not so much that I couldn't buy into the story. The writing is vivid, so I felt the anxiety, fear, helplessness, determination, and, yes, the cold. White Out is the first book in the new Badlands Thriller series. The book has a solid ending, no cliffhangers. I'm looking forward to book 2.
