Richard Phillips

Richard Phillips was born in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1956. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979 and qualified as a US Army Ranger, going on to serve as an officer in the army. He earned a master’s degree in physics from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1989, completing his thesis work at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After working as a research associate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, he returned to the army to complete his tour of duty. Richard is the author of several science fiction and fantasy series, including The Rho Agenda (The Second Ship, Immune, and Wormhole); The Rho Agenda Inception (Once Dead, Dead Wrong, and Dead Shift); The Rho Agenda Assimilation (The Kasari Nexus, The Altreian Enigma, and The Meridian Ascent); and Mark of Fire, Prophecy’s Daughter, Curse of the Chosen, and The Shattered Trident in the epic Endarian Prophecy series. The book is good but I am giving it 3 out of 5 because the person reading sounds awful. At times reading as if she was Siri when beginning a sentence, having some emotion and well pronounced words in the middle, and ending a sentence totally flat. Terrible reading dynamics, not able to properly pronounce end of a statement, wrong times for pauses, not recognizing when to lower the voice or to decrease it. Dreadful. Of all the audio books I have listened to this one was the worst only because of the person reading. Why would anyone allow this to be published like this is beyond me....

So if this wasn't an audio I might not have hated it quite so much. The writing was clunky and needed a good editor. In standard book form I would have skimmed through the painfully boring parts. The audio format does not allow this and the weaknesses of the book were emphasized. Riding through a tunnel to a castle and going inside was a ten minute affair. The person unmounting a horse, picking up their pack and slinging it over their left shoulder (yes, very important apparently that it was the left) then proceeding... Yeah. The storyline was also extremely generic. That's fine at times, was even a little what I was looking for, but this was painfully, boringly formulaic.

I've read other things by this author and listened to audiobooks of other works by them also so while I won't continue this series I'll still follow the author.

The narrator. Totally didn't do it for me. Hated the choices she did for most of the characters. Male and female. Normally I stop noticing even if the narrator to me isn't great but just couldn't.

So yeah. Almost didn't finish it. Glad it's over.

The author created some very interesting characters and the world overall seems to be detailed and well thought out. I enjoy the character development and the connections everyone seems to have. Makes the characters more lifelike. The world itself seems massive and I would like to learn more about the myths and religions that the author has created. I am actively seeking the next books to read and hopes to get even more from the next books. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into the Fantasy genre.
