About this audiobook
All the pretty girls vanish one by one… Return to the riveting start of the Taylor Jackson series by New York Times bestselling author J.T. Ellison with a heart-pounding case of murder, intrigue, and lies buried deep.
After a local girl turns up dead, Nashville Homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson is determined to catch the serial rapist responsible for the crime. Called “The Southern Strangler,” this sadistic killer is slaughtering young women throughout Southeast, leaving a gruesome memento at each crime scene—the prior victim's severed hand. Taylor finds herself in a joint investigation with her lover, FBI profiler Dr. John Baldwin, as they pursue the vicious murderer.
Ambitious TV reporter Whitney Connolly is certain the Southern Strangler is her ticket out of Nashville; she's got a scoop that could break the case. But she has no idea how close to this story she really is—or what it will cost her.
Battling an old injury and her own demons, Taylor is desperate to quell the rising tide of bodies. But as the killer spirals out of control, everyone involved must face a horrible truth—the purest evil is born of private lies.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Ellison writes beautifully. I've listened to four of her novels at this point. But I have a big problem with this one.
The killer's motive doesn't ring true. Yes, what happened to him, what his parents and grandparents did, was awful. But he was extremely bright. If he knew the truth as a teenager, I can't see someone like that turning into a serial killer for the sole purpose of getting back at his mother. A child his age when he found out the truth wouldn't have been able to hold that knowledge back.
Unless he was a psychopath. And there is no effort to construct him as that -- not until the very end. Plus if he were in fact a psychopath, evidence suggesting that should have been there earlier. He's barely a character at all in the book until the very end.
Plus, I am not convinced of his motives. And I'm not convinced that he wouldn't have at least been a very distant suspect. If indications of his psychopathology had been hinted at sooner, I might buy it. I know the point is to try to keep readers from speculating about him until close to the end. But to me that doesn't seem enough justification.
I'll let you in on a "secret" (not so secret thanks to my Medium blog). I have more than a small acquaintance with psychological disorders, both via experience and by informal study. So this disappointment has some knowledge behind it.
Maybe I missed something. I tend to fall asleep quite often while I'm listening (which has nothing to do with the book--I have a sleep disorder). And I don't always run it back to exactly the right spot. Usually I do. But not always. So maybe a clue or two was dropped in the minute or three I missed.
This one left me unsatisfied, while the earlier three didn't. Of course I'll keep listening. This disappointment isn't enough to put me off Ellison completely.
I am sure others will heartily disagree with me.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great read. I enjoyed this first book in the Taylor Jackson series. Look forward to finding out what is next for Lt. Taylor Jackson and Dr. John Baldwin.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Never a dull moment and the characters were likeable and believable
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The narrator is a poor choice for this book. The voice is too old sounding for the main character’s description and the over the top forced Southern accents makes me cringe. I haven’t made it all the way through the book yet but I’m going to keep pushing through. The story is interesting but the narrator is a turn off.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Mediocre writing, pretty likeable characters and an enjoyable plot line. It’s been great to have something on in the background while doing chores and errands
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent as always! I cannot say enough good things about this series
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Somewhat predictable, but a good listen. Would recommend to mystery fans.
