Words cannot describe what I felt during the time I read this book. Knowing that this is the last book in the mortal instruments series felt terribly wrong but I'm glad it's over though.
I adore the series and CoHF was a great ending - Hail and Farewell!

Much rambling and possible spoilers ahead:

Okay, I don't know what all the hubbub was about, but I enjoyed this book.

Of course I could have done without Clary/Jace whiny angst. And I still cannot get over the fact that while packing for a trip to [literal] hell, Jace thought that weapons, food and water weren't enough; he had to throw condoms into his duffel bag 'just in case'. Seriously?! I get why they would did it, because they may not have gotten another chance and when you're in love, you want to be intimate in every way possible with your beloved. But they were in hell and Jace had condoms. Just blown away by that.

I find their relationship both beautiful and ugly. I get it. Everyone wants to be loved someone that would be willing to destroy the world just to save them, just to be with them. Everyone wants to love someone that deeply. It's passionate, and pure, and absolutely beautiful. And at the same time, it's selfish, and toxic, and ugly. You'd let the whole world burn for that person. You'd let the whole world burn for that person!

Alec...I was a little perturbed with Alec in this book. I just don't understand how he could turn the whole thing around on Magnus. Magnus had EVERY right to be upset with him and to break-up with him. Alec went behind his back with someone he had been warned was manipulative and untrustworthy. Not to mention the fact that she was his boyfriend's ex. I would take the words of an ex-lover with a grain of salt, especially a vampire who was on the run for killing a bunch of people. He was trying to take away Magnus' immortality, which would essentially be killing Magnus. It was because of his insecurities, not because he was doing what was best for Magnus. That was pretty crappy, and I don't know that I would have forgiven him. He's lucky Magnus wasn't blatantly cruel to him. All he did was ignore him, I would have done worse.

Also, I still don't get why he was mad that Magnus won't talk about everything in his past. Clearly there was a good reason; some things are best left in the past. Not to mention the fact that Magnus has hundreds of years of 'past'. Magnus' past might have made him who he was, but that doesn't mean anyone has a right to it. It's like the whole past lovers argument. No one needs to know about past lovers unless there is a child(ren) involved. I feel like Magnus did share some things with Alec, but they were only together a short time. Alec's youth and inexperience comes into play again, because in time, Magnus would have likely opened up more and more. But he didn't get the chance. They were together for a few months, I don't know what Alec honestly expected. For a portion of their time together, he treated Magnus like a dirty, dirty secret that was buried in the back of his closet. I thought it was very big of Magnus to decide to tell Alec about his past in order make him happy, and I know he did it because that's what you do for someone you love. And you know what else you do? You respect their wishes! I don't think you always have to know who someone was in order to love who they are. Alec fell for Magnus without knowing any of his past, so what changed? This actually really bothered me and I'm not sure if I feel the same what about the pairing anymore. Who the heck and I trying to kid?! Malec all the way... I'll just be a little miffed with Alec on Magnus' behalf.

And Simon, my little muffin! He is all that is adorable and awesome and I love him so, so much better than Jace. He was loyal and loving and so very brave! He literally saved them all and for the longest time, they had all (except for Clary) treated him so terribly. Isabelle and Alec were borderline cruel toward him (Alec more so) and Jace...well we know it started off as raging jealousy...and then, no, I think it was always jealousy. First because he thought that Simon was with Clary, and later because of how close they were--Clary would never abandon Simon for Jace. (Even though she would let the world be destroyed if he meant saving Jace, go figure.)

The one good thing I will say about Clary is that I love they way she loves Simon. This is the one relationship that I think was portrayed realistically. She would do anything for Simon and when she thought she would lose him, it broke her. I would be like that if I lost my bestie. I would kill and die for her, and I know she would do the same for me. I think their relationship made me smile the most throughout the series. There is nothing that compares to best friend love.

I am so very happy that Simon got a second chance at not just life, but life with the family he had built. And now he's going to become a badass shadowhunter! But I'm not sure how many more of these books I can read.

Where do I start with this one... It's been over a week since I've finished it and I think maybe I forgot about writing this review.

I thought this was a satisfying conclusion to the series. It's a book that's as thick as a Harry Potter, not one of the early ones either, one of the latter, 700 page behemoths. And reading it, I understood WHY it was so long. How many characters' stories can you really jam into a 700 page book? The answer is a lot. Fans of Clare's related series The Infernal Devices will be thrilled to learn the end of Tessa and Jem's story (well, an end. I have a feeling they may show up in her next series, The Dark Artifaces too.) There's also a fair bit of time spent with new characters, who I'm quite sure will be the protagonists of said next series. They're very... young. And perhaps because I am more "A" than "YA," I didn't find their bits of story terribly interesting as a result. It's hard to connect with these characters in what is essentially a prequel to their story and I feel their material may have been better suited to independent release or a fun bonus chapter for first edition purchasers of the next book, due in 2015.

As for the main characters we've known for so long, the story satisfied my need for resolution, though it was a bit too neatly tied up for my tastes. A certain plot twist comes more full circle than I would have expected, leading away from character development I might have expected. I'm referring to Simon miraculously remembering the magical world. If we want Clary to have to experience anything real, which she really doesn't in these stories, it would have made more impact to have him stay "normal" instead of being drawn back into her world. That said, I didn't expect this turn of events and I admit, it was a somewhat pleasant surprise. Clary's experiences are tough, sure, but she doesn't really loose anyone close to her, she doesn't experience hardship that isn't resolved into something good. Her story is all positive outcomes in the end. End rant. Overall, a satisfying conclusion and a quick read.

It has taken me approximately forever to read through the Mortal Instruments, but here we are. The main reason for reading these was wanting to get to the later series, but I don't really regret it even if it wasn't the most enjoyable experience. The last book has possibly been one of my favorites in the series, if not the favorite. Especially the humor shone through here, and maybe the fact that there was a lot less unnecessary drama between Clary and Jace was also a factor. The plot was pretty average, but I do like the world Clare has built here, and I've definitely grown fond of the characters. I'll very likely move onto the next series some times this year, but not straight away.

Great ending to the amazing first series in the Shadowhunters series! Many interesting plot twists that I wasn't expecting, but fit marvelously in with the whol 'love and loss' theme. I love these characters so dearly and I really am excited to see their adult personas in the Dark Artificies series, even if they aren't necessarily the main characters. I am excited to see the road that the Blackthorn children go down as well as Emma Carstairs' path with them. All in all I thought this was an amazing series and I am sad to be ending it, but Cassandra Clare really has done some amazing work!

Really enjoyed this series! Action, suspense, humour, romance - it had everything.

This was my least favourite book in the series. Compared to the other books, it just didn't have the same levels of excitement. There was the big final battle, which was great, but a lot of the book was too much about feelings. I honestly think that the book was too long - it could have been condensed down a fair bit, but there was a lot of dialogue about feelings that, for me, went on a bit too long.

I didn't really like the addition of the news characters - Emma Carstairs et al - It seemed strange, devoting so much time to new characters right at the end of a series, and I just saw them as a way to get me to read other books. I didn't really think they added much to this story and the plot could have happened just as well without them.

The biggest disappointment for me was the ending. I think it should have been left as Simon not remembering anything that happened - his sacrifice was huge and emotional and the ending just cancelled out all of this - after the epilogue, it was a bit too much 'happily ever after' for absolutely everyone and it fell a bit flat for me. Such a shame.

I think after this I've probably read enough of the Shadowhunters world - for a while at least. Good to know she's writing something new and different now.

There's so many unfinished business neverthless I can't ask for more, this end has made me teary and smiley, happy and sad. My emotion are all over the place.

It was a great conclusion to the mortal instrument but also a new beginning and introduction to the next serie that will take place in Los Angeles, which I'm Super excited for! *Squeel*

I'm hoocked to this world, A perfect serie. It's going to go to my shelf of favorite series of all time !

This conclusion was everything I had hoped for and more: an epic adventure, exploring new and old terrains, ending old storylines and introducing intriguing new ones, and the journey was just as important as the destination in this final installment.

All hope seems lost for our heroes, when the unthinkable happens--utter betrayal from a trusted ally. Lies from those who cannot lie. What are they to do when all that lays in Sebastian's wake is death and destruction?

The character deaths and death-fakeouts were emotionally charged and effective, but the deus es machina at the very end kind of killed it for me a little bit. Would have liked more death, frankly, and especially of a main character, not a character only introduced several books in.

This was probably my favorite book in the series. I'm not sure if I liked the growth from the characters the most or the situations they found themselves in. I also appreciated that the author found ways to wrap up the series that weren't 100% traditional.

I would recommend this series for older teens as there are some adult situations and some violent depictions of war. There is such a variety of topics covered though that I feel like it would appeal to a wide range of teens... as long as they don't mind the fantasy/supernatural elements.

I am a massive fan of The Mortal Instruments series as well as all of the shadowhunter books by Cassandra Clare so when Amazon notified me that my pre-ordered copy of City of Heavenly Fire, the final installment of the Mortal Instruments series, arrived via kindle I was ecstatic. I dropped all of the other books I was reading and began reading CoHF immediately and it did not disappoint. Please be aware that this is not spoiler-free as I’ll mention things that happened in previous books.


I thoroughly enjoyed this book! When the book began, it didn’t focus on the scooby gang of the series (Jace, Clary, Alec, Isabelle, and Simon) but instead completely unknown shadowhunter children in a different part of the world. I found myself not only scared for these children but wondering what the happenings at their institute would have to do with what happened in the last book. Once they bring it back to the big bad of the series, Sebastian, I’m met with the fear for the lives of these people I’ve grown to love over the course of 5 books. He’s still wreaking havoc everywhere and trying to “burn the world down”. Turning shadowhunters into his minions and using them to do his bidding. Same ol’ Sebastian. His numbers are growing extremely fast, he couldn’t possibly be doing this alone but who would want to help such a monster?

In an attempt to break allegiances, Sebastian resorts to drastic measures by kidnapping representatives from all of the downworlders and placing a steep ransom, Jace and Clary. Shadowhunters do not negotiate with terrorists but that doesn’t stop the gang from taking matters into their own hands. They wouldn’t be the protagonists of the series if they didn’t. Jace, while not exactly likable but still very much charming, now wields and struggles to control the heavenly fire within him. Clary plagued with the fact her brother would like very much to kill everyone who isn’t her. Simon trying to protect himself from the vampires who either want him dead or want to use him. Alec is suffering from a broken heart, as is Magnus, the warlock love of his life. Isabelle being herself and reeling from discoveries about her parents as well as her tricky romance with Simon. Together this band of misfits sets on a journey to free their friends and family but of course, nothing is ever easy. Really everything comes down to what it always comes down to, the battle of good and evil.

I would recommend this book if you enjoy the series but not if you haven’t read any of the other books. There’s little back story which is fine with me because I could not imagine picking up the finale in a series and expecting it to explain the previous books to me, that’s what the previous books are for! There’s also some delightful call backs to The Infernal Devices (another shadowhunter series by Cassandra Clare set long before this one)

I finished the series! I know this was a lot of people’s favorite of the series, but I think it may be one of my least favorite of the series. I feel things happened just to have another book, and I think this one was way to long. I found myself bored at some parts. Overall, I love Clary and Jace, Izzy and Simon, Alec and Magnus, and all of the characters. I am happy I finished the series and I look forward to reading more of CC writing.

I thought this was a great ending. I love seeing the characters from The Infernal Devices. Everything tied up perfectly, a little sadness and a lot of happiness. I'm wondering if the book Magus gave Alec is the Bane Chronicles. Can't wait to read it too.
