Gods are forbidden in the kingdom of Middren. Formed by human desires and fed by their worship, there are countless gods in the world—but after a great war, the new king outlawed them and now pays “godkillers” to destroy any who try to rise from the shadows.
As a child, Kissen saw her family murdered by a fire god. Now, she makes a living killing them and enjoys it. But all this changes when Kissen is tasked with helping a young noble girl with a god problem. The child’s soul is bonded to a tiny god of white lies, and Kissen can’t kill it without ending the girl’s life too.
Joined by a disillusioned knight on a secret quest, the unlikely group must travel to the ruined city of Blenraden, where the last of the wild gods reside, to each beg a favor. Pursued by assassins and demons, and in the midst of burgeoning civil war, they will all face a reckoning. Something is rotting at the heart of their world, and they are the only ones who can stop it.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5a strange and lovely novel
not written in blood
bound up both in tides and fire - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The narrator gasping before every sentence very distracting. I finished the audiobook, but I never really got past it.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Generic YA, nothing new. Interesting opening concept but no follow-through to make it stay unique. The romance was also very forced.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I’ve been reading this in paperback and enjoyed the story, hence the 4 stars……But this narrator takes a sharp inhale before every sentence and it drove me crazy within 30 seconds… I hope the re-record.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A little bit of a slow start but a very good story of Gods and betrayal and love
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Everything about this was awesome! Went in completely blind and it was wonderful, already bought the sequel
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5First everyone give it up for that cover.
I remember this coming out and everyone being hyped for it and then nothing. No one talked about it.
So figured I would start my year off with it. Going in blind ? I like never read the synopsis until I'm done with it.
It does not sell this book as a witcher vibe but it completely gives it. Someone trained to dispatch "monster"(the gods) and crosses the path with an orphaned girl and goes on a journey to help the girl.
AND THERE IS A HORSE! can't forget Legs.
I honestly love this book and could have absolutely finished this in a day if life didn't think it had to keep the punches rolling, but plus side I didn't have to wait to long for the second books, because that ending. Excuse me?!? - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This story was a little slow to start. But picked up. I am looking forward to the next book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved this book and the narration was so good. A great fantasy story and not too long.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the greatest in a while I love it

Humans created the gods by praying to them, offering trinkets or blood, asking for little things: health, love, success, a child, or help mending shoes. As the gods granted these wishes, the humans gave bigger and bigger gifts, and the gods became greedy and demanded more gifts and attention, but granting less, thriving off the humans who worshiped them, not caring about the humans' suffering or death. And to get even more attention, they will battle one another in order to take the other's worshippers. In one of these battles, they killed the queen and her children, leaving her youngest son the throne and he waged war on the gods.
Three years later, gods are forbidden, and there are godkillers, like Kissen, who are paid to kill any remaining gods. After a successful hunt, a young girl asks for her help because she had a god problem, but it was a problem nobody had seen before.
This is the first book of the series and the prologue was a good hook, but the story slowed down a little for the next few chapters as the reader got to know each of the four MCs, each of whom got their own (3rd person) chapters.
I liked the world but it needs more detail/backstories of how the gods were created and lived, and more about how the war started because these major past events feel like an unimportant brushover.
It wasn't overly violent but there is an adult scene that's borderline, so it's more suitable for readers 16 and older.
Overall, this was a good story and I'll be looking for the next in the series.
