- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I couldn;t get excited about this book. Tells of Luca, a self centered mountain climber who (having almost left his clibing buddy to die on a mountain just so he could make the summit) drags him back out to the Himalayas to climb a mytical pyramid mountain. On the way to the mountain they get themselves and otherpeople into all sorts of trouble, most of it relating to the Chinese captain who is intent on stopping them, as he thinks they're intent on saving the Panchen Lama (apologies for spelling). It jumps about from Luca to the Captain and his unfortunate sidekick, and is generally disjointed. It didn't flow, was all a bit far-fetched and with a character quite as unsympathetic as Luca it's difficult to care. It wasn't that it was bad, it just wasn't my thing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Patrick Woodhead, a professional adventurer with a South African connection, has written a wonderfully exciting story in the tradition of Alistair MacLean and Hammond Innes: when mountaineering fanatic Luca Matthews hears of a virgin peak in the Himalayas, he is determined to bag it, despite it being in a proscribed area of Tibet. Pursued by the Chinese secret police and tormented by the elements, he gets thoroughly lost until he is brought to a secret monastery, the only one to survive Chinese depredations, which contains a hidden treasure. A page turner in the grand tradition, Cloud Maker is a great read for all lovers of authentic action adventure.
