About this audiobook

A funny, small-town lesbian romance about clashing cultures and daring to dream big.

LA-based English indie filmmaker Alex Levitin reluctantly takes a job in New Zealand to save the "worst movie ever", Shezan: Mistress of the Forest. Things might go easier for her if she didn't almost run over the standoffish, beautiful local cop on her first day in town. And it'd really help if her film set wasn't being mysteriously sabotaged.

When Ika Whenu's Senior Constable Sam Keegan isn't trying to stamp out a motorcycle gang drug problem afflicting her town, she's publicly slamming everything about the exploitative film, Shezan, and the Hollywood blow-ins making it. That includes its nerdy, cute director, Alex, who has woeful driving skills to go with her smart mouth.

Against the stunning scenery and chaotic film-set backdrop, attraction flares between the two warring women as they're forced to work together to find the set saboteur.

Contains mature themes.

Glad I read (listened to) this book, but it's not a favorite
There's a lot to say about this book, and not all of it will be good. I listened to the audiobook. I liked the narrator a lot, especially the New Zealand voices. I did listen at 1.5 speed. Boy, the narration was slow. It's a LONG book, and I didn't think it really had to be that long. The synopsis said it was a funny book, and there were a few funny bits, but I wouldn't characterize the book as funny. The book went lots of places and to me that felt disorganized and jarring. It was a strange book, and I'm not sure how much I liked it, although I was glad I read (listened to) it. There was a lot to like. The movie plot was interesting, and the mystery was interesting but then the conclusion wasn't very fulfilling. I liked that some of the characters were complicated, including Sam. Alex didn't really capture my attention. I liked how she reshaped the movie, but that's about it. I loved learning about Sam's daily life and her past and everything. The New Zealand culture and scenery is very compelling. The main characters had some chemistry, but it wasn't really deep. I much preferred the chemistry between Sam and the other characters, both human and canine. I didn't catch any errors, but I know I missed stuff due to the Kiwi accents and concepts. Overall, a mixed bag for me.
