Cosying up to crime

Considering her three decades on screen, My Life Is Murder is possibly the weirdest show Lucy Lawless has ever done. It’s a cosy crime drama in which she’s playing Alexa Crowe, a former Melbourne police detective whose investigative skills are still in demand.

It’s not the fantasy, sci-fi or horror that have defined much of her career. It’s not set in ancient Rome or Greece or on a spaceship. There’s no sex, very little violence and Crowe spends most of her downtime jogging, baking or feeding the cat.

For the actress who became in the late 90s, the 2019 first season of marked her return to a lead role after two decades of supporting turns, guest appearances and animated voices in mostly US productions.
