About this audiobook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Fully realized, wholly absorbing and almost painfully suspenseful...The journey is mesmerizing.”
New York Times

A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf.

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.

I figured out most of the twists long before they happened but this is a solid thriller. Kept me listening and engaged from start to finish.

First half was incredible- I felt like I was their in every scene. Second half didn’t make sense, it was lackluster, formulaic and dull.

The plot fell apart in the last half. The final scene was comically awful—where was the editor?? Reader was very good.

I enjoyed it, although I don't like such coincidences as in this book, it feels too far fetched but it was still an enjoyable read.

It started out really strong, the mystery so intriguing, but unfortunately the excitement dwindled after a while and the story’s pace slowed down. It stretched too much towards the end before everything is revealed so that took away from the surprise.

The audio narration was really good though.

    ❄️ locked door mystery
    ❄️ multiple POV
    ❄️ dual timeline
    ❄️ unsolved crime
    ❄️ In Cold Blood vibes

I love a good mystery. One that keeps you on your toes, makes you change your mind a million times, and makes you go 'Ah-ha!'.

While I did guess some of the twists and mysteries along the way, the final killer reveal, I did not see coming. I think I pictured some people older than they actually were and didn't do the proper math with the past and present timeline, so it through off my guesses of the killer.

I loved the multiple points of view, giving just a little bit more information with each chapter until the POV came together to form the bigger picture.

The narrator is one of my favorites, Brittany Pressley. She has done multiple rom-coms and mytery/thrillers. She does a fantastic job with the suspense. I hung onto every word and stayed up way too late.

I love true crime and loved In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, detailing the gruesome murders of the Clutter family in Kansas in the 1950's. This story was so reminiscent of that event. My heart broke for Josie and losing her family and just wanting them to be taken to the hospital so they could be fixed.

This one will stay with me for quite some time!

I don't know why this book gets such good reviews. First half was OK but the second half was terrible. It was totally predictable and much of it is unrealistic in its dialogue and actions which felt completely unnatural and downright stupid at times. Huge disappointment. Don't waste your time. If you're insightful at all you'll only be frustrated by the end.

Liked the story, just amazing that a female author would demean women with such characters depicted here. Nobody could make as many dumb decisions as these characters, Too bad it stooped to this to enhance the story
