Carol Kent writes of her and her family's ordeal as her son is jailed indefinitely for the murder of the father of his step children. Her painful story is interspersed with tragic stories of other women whose lives have also been permanently affected by a tragic event. Kent candidly admits she has been angry at God at times. However, her faith has also given her hope and enabled to her adjust to her new kind of normal. At the end of each chapter, questions are provided to encourage the reader to reflect on her own circumstances.

"Carol Kent knows better than anyone that sometimes you can't force life to meet your expectations. Instead, you must adjust to a new kind of normal. With gripping honesty, Carol weave together her own painful story with the stories of other who have learned to live the lives they were given. Carol shows again and again that it is possible to persevere against despair, to hold on to hope, an to trust God's faithfulness in an upside-down world.
