About this audiobook

She was born a princess. They made her an assassin.

Myrina of Stormskeep should be dead. The seven self-crowned, murderous kings of the Storm Queen's Realm thought she was killed in their massacre. But Myrina lives, and while she draws breath, she plots their end:

One will appear an accident.

Two a coincidence.

By three, they will know.

But vengeance rarely goes according to plan. The worst of the kings holds her sister--rightful queen and heir to the kingdom--captive. If Lettie isn’t freed before she comes into her magic, the kings will hold her power as well.

Myrina can let nothing stop her. With the help of her loyal bloodsworn Cassius, the shadow princess will have her revenge.

Vowed to enact retribution and rescue her sister with no more than her wits and a sword--and the last of her queensguard--this YA fantasy is perfect for fans of Shielded and The Princess Will Save You.

Melissa Wright

Melissa is the author of more than a dozen YA and fantasy novels including The Frey Saga and Between Ink and Shadows. When not writing she can generally be found talking with an author friend about a book, painting something from a book, or tucked between headphones listening to a book. It’s kind of a theme. She loves reasonable heroines in unreasonable situations, noble--if brooding--heroes, slow burn and sweet kisses, a lot of havoc, and a little magic. Had potential but was pretty boring. The romance wasn’t convincing and the action was few and far between.

It was an average read. Nothing was really special and stands out. And predictable also.

Ho hum. I found my mind wandering off in other directions while supposiedly listening to an Action Novel?! Not exactly the best endorsement for cliff-hanging excitement.
Next time I will read the other reviews first. Two Stars

I liked it my main problem was that some parts were missing from the audio and I started bookmaking them where there were at least 7 instances of 30sec or more of dead space

Loved it! It was a lot of fun, I loved the characters and the plot. The romance was cute and not too fast, very nicely done. Very satisfying read, it was the first time I was reading a book by this author and I’ll definitely be checking out her other works

Nope. I feel like it was too short for the story to develop properly, the plot was not bad but something was missing. The "plot twist" was so obvious I figured it out half way. It's a no for me.

Myrina was a princess until the lords took her older sister hostage and killed their mother. In hiding for years, Myrina plots the death of those seven lords before they can take the life of her sister on her name day, the day she'll become the rightful queen.

They all think Myrina is dead; killed and burned beside her mother, and now she'll kill them one by one.

This was an easy read. There wasn't much action or suspense. Sure there were sword fights and the such, but they were mostly brushed over. 'He was fighting over there while she was blocking and rolling to avoid this sword, now he's fighting someone else and there's a body on the floor...' That was pretty much it.

I get the reason why she used the things she did to kill the lords, but there was only one way that was really described, but it still lacked detail. Again, brushed over details that could've given this book another star.

It's also missing a deep dive into Myrina's past. There isn't much that explains how she knew everything she did, she was only a young girl when everything went down, and from the little that was written about then and during her time in hiding, didn't really explain where she learned to handle a sword and other weapons.

Overall not a bad story, it's interesting, and the narrator did a great job, but the story lacks action and those little details that keep a reader holding their breath, eyes darting over the words, as the action plays out.

    A low...

It was okay. Less exciting than I hoped it would be. The action felt very…at a distance.

I’m not sure why there are so many bad reviews, because this book was a good book. The ending was definitely a good surprise and the build up to that point was well written. I would recommend this book for sure.

I loved the characters - they have so much complexity and they’re relatable too! But the storyline itself was a bit dry and the ending seemed cliche. But it’s still a great book. The narrator was good too.

Fiona is such a good narrator. She’s so good at conveying feeling and emotion. And the book was such a fun ride!!

Enjoyable, but hard to follow at times. I think at parts the author was trying to leave a trail of breadcrumbs for the reader to follow, but it is hard to get that just right. I was definitely intrigued by the premise but would have enjoyed more killing of kings in different ways. The title was slightly misleading for what is actually happening in the book.

I think this would make a great film adaptation, though. I will probably read other stories by this author.
