About this audiobook
A trainee jockey has been kicked to death by an aggressive stallion at the local stables. Deemed an accidental death, the case is closed. But when the jockey's brother returns from active service, he sparks an armed siege, demanding the investigation be re-opened and the truth uncovered.
Still recovering from the physical and mental scars of his last case, Detective Inspector Nick Dixon is dragged deep into a murky world of betting scams and murder, where people will do anything to keep their secrets. Even if that means silencing a DI who keeps asking the wrong questions about the wrong dead jockey...
Kickback is the third novel in the highly acclaimed DI Nick Dixon Crime Series.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was $1.99 on Kindle, so worth a try. Boyd writes plain and simple British detective procedurals (Did I invent a word?). The emphasis is on PROCEDURE. Every little detail, every step, is provided. He sits down. He turns on his computer. He opens Google. I thought I was going to hate all this over-writing, but Boyd is too clever a writer. His narrative flows along with a kind of Frederick Forsythe tempo that is easy to fall in step with. He makes sure we don't have to flick back 12 pages to remember a character's place in the story. As a result, he doesn't require much of the reader except to keep going. And he makes it easy. A lot of writers would make a mess of this. Boyd gets the balance right. Impressed. Probably worth more than 3 stars for skill alone.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5very enjoyable book, dispute the murders! the characters are good and story is easy to read but keeps you wanting more. I will read the next book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Hey Thomas and Mercer: Your editors are not horse people. Mr. Boyd consistently uses the word "stable" when he means "stall." Horse trailers are cleaned thoroughly after every use to help prevent the spread of disease. Racing stables use many kinds of saddles. Readers are going to be upset. As I have said in my reviews of the first two DI Nick Dixon books, these stories do not rise above midlevel competence. This one especially relies on coincidence rather than on DI Dixon's detective work. The coincidence that Noel's client happens to board his horse where Noel works beggars belief, as does the coincidence of Nick happening to see Tanner and the bookie on the phones. If he could see these calls, so could the racing board. The idea that the place where the drugs are hidden would not have been examined or the drugs detected by the dogs means that Mr. Boyd and his editors know little of drug busts or drug dogs. And was Mrs. G murdered or not? Dangling thread. Oh yeah, rattlesnakes don't spit venom.I received a review copy of "Kickback" by Damien Boyd (Thomas and Mercer/Amazon Publishing) through NetGalley.com.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another cracking story, this time providing interesting insights into the horse racing and betting sectors, as DI Nick Dixon investigates a suspicious death in a stables. As always, authentic Somerset locations and believable characters together with clever plotting keep you reading to the end.
