Between the suspense, mystery and many twists, it’s no surprise that Showmax’s original telenovela The Wife took the country by storm earlier this year. Inspired by local author Dudu Busani-Dube’s Hlomu book series, The Wife introduced viewers to the dysfunctional Zulu brothers and their attempts to protect their taxi empire.
The first season centred around middle sibling (Bonko Khoza) and his journalist wife (Mbalenhle Mavimbela) toxic marriage. In season 2, which is loosely based on Dudu’s novel Zandile: The Resolute, the spotlight moves to another Zulu couple – and that’s eldest brother Nkosana (Mondli Makhoba) and his ex-convict wife Zandile (Khanyi Mbau) days after her prison break that played out in The Wife’s season finale. “When this season – which was originally going to be called The Resolute – starts, Zandile is looking to start on clean slate and forge a bond with her loved ones following her 10-year sentence, but things don’t go as well as she anticipates,” explains Khanyi, who recently played Zaza in the romcom film Happiness Ever After. Khanyi chats to us between her frantic filming schedule about her leading role as Zandile in The Wife season 2.
