- The Bodacious Kid
1
It is the end of the year 1882 in Progress County in the Montana Territory, when young Merlin Fanshaw finds himself caught between the competing agendas of a ruthless outlaw, two very different lawmen, and one pretty girl. Thus begins the fastpaced adventure of Merlin, the Bodacious Kid, as he deals with gold, greed, and gunfire. But there is more to this story, within its pages and beneath the sweeping movement of its plot lies a deft and subtle examination of such unchanging and timeless topics such as character, morality, and the place of individual conscience in the life of Merlin, and in the lives of us all. The Bodacious Kid is a novel alive with humor, suspense, romance, and authentic frontier atmosphere gained through a lifetime of living, researching, and depicting the West.
- Careless Creek
2
Merlin Fanshaw is the "Bodacious Kid." Now, as a young man, he finds himself the proud new owner of a blood-bay thoroughbred race horse. After his parents death, Merlin had been semi-adopted by livery owner Walt Finkleman. But now old Walt is dead and Merlin is alone, except for the prized horse the kind old man left to him. Touched by the inheritance, Merlin sees the horse, Quicksilver, as a chance to change his future. Quicksilver could win him fortune and fame at the racetracks. Merlin was right about the horse changing his future, after winning at the races, his horse is now coveted by unsavory horse thieves who will stop at nothing to make Quicksilver their own. Thus begins another wild-ride of a chapter in Merlin Fanshaw's life, as he faces a showdown, escapes from a posse, and meets up again with the beautiful Crow Indian, Pandora Pretty Hawk...who is on the run herself. A thoroughly enjoyable ride through the Old West.
- Saving Miss Julie
3
When cattle Baron Thane McAllister's daughter Julie disappears from her home and a ransom note signed by the notorious Coldwater brothers arrives at the ranch, the cattleman calls on his longtime friend U.S. Marshall Chance Ridgeway to deal with the situation. Marshall Ridgeway deputizes cowboy Merlin Fanshaw (The Bodacious Kid) and sends him and legendary tracker Hoodoo Hawks to deliver the ransom and rescue Julie. The job is supposed to be a simple one, but Merlin soon learns that a "simple assignment can sometimes be the most difficult of all."
- Marshall of Medicine Lodge
4
There are a few white settlements, including Fort Custer on the Bighorn River, a trading post or two, a couple of missionaries, and the town of Medicine Lodge some twenty miles south of the new Crow Agency. There are two big cow outfits in the area and a couple of small ranches, all trespassing on tribal land. There are a dozen or so farmers along Medical Lodge Creek, and they're trespassing too. The Crow Indians are on short rations, and hungry. Every now and then, they steal a steer or two from the cowmen. The cowmen strike back and steal the Crows' horses. Once in a while, somebody gets shot. Even so, it is a marvel the situation isn't a whole lot worse, considering that red men and white men don't understand each other at all. They have mostly gotten along well...until lately.
- Summer Snow: A Merlin Fanshaw Western
5
U.S. Deputy Marshal Merlin Fanshaw is out of town on the day George Starkweather and his outlaw band hold up the Cattleman's Bank of Dry Creek. Upon his return, Fanshaw's boss, U.S. Marshal Chance Ridgeway, suggests the deputy volunteer to infiltrate the gang as an undercover agent. Fanshaw hesitates only a moment before agreeing. He and Starkweather have a dark history, and he's eager to bring his old nemesis to justice.
- Vendetta Canyon
6
Sheepman Abel McKenzie and cattleman Zack Rainford were once the best of friends, but are now, in 1887 Montana Territory, mortal enemies. Their escalating feud threatens to throw the people of Meriwether County into a bloody range war. Three ranchers have already been killed, and the investigation into the homicides received only cursory review. One of those three men was McKenzie's employee. Deputy United States Marshal Merlin Fanshaw is sent to investigate and enforce the law. Shortly after his arrival in Meriwether County, Deputy Fanshaw's assignment is complicated by the activities of a corrupt sheriff, a mysterious range detective, and a clandestine romance between the shepherd's son and the cattleman's daughter. Deputy Fanshaw accepts the burden of their secret and becomes an ally to the young lovers. If the two young people get married, it could help unite the feuding families, or it could light the fuse on the lethal powder keg. With conditions in the area becoming more strained, the McKenzie and Rainford homes become armed camps, with malice running rampant between the cowhands and sheepherders. Can Deputy Fanshaw prevent any further bloodshed? What will it take for him to put an end to the Meriwether County War?
