All the female characters are oppressed victims. The males are all some combination of abusive, oppressive, ignorant, incompetent, incapable, lazy, criminal scoundrels. After reading this book, one would think that all the hardships of the rural west fell on women while, the men sat back and enjoyed the slave labor of their wives. If you associate with the female victim, or generally don't like men, you will love this book.
