Fear is a basic survival instinct that will always be with us on this human journey. Feelings of fear are perfectly normal and are nothing to be denied or ashamed off. Because we need fear for survival, fear will always be on guard and it has to be hyper-vigilant but it can be over-protective – if we let it. If we become a slave to fear, we will miss out on opportunities to grow spiritually and we won’t realise the life God wants us to experience. The importance of living courageously as Christians is that it enables us to become resilient. Resilience is the quality of being able to respond to the challenges of life with courage and become stronger. It allows us to us to get back in the fight every time we fall down. Adaptability is the ability to think and act flexibly in the face of changing and unexpected circumstances and is important to developing courage in our lives. In evolutionary terms adaptability is a key factor in survival. Having a rigid, inflexible approach to unexpected and challenging events is not a good strategy. Our lives and the world we live in are constantly changing and we must adapt. Our challenge is to live the Christian values of courage by putting the words of Scripture into action in our daily lives. The Bible is meant to help us to live our best possible life, in line with God’s will. But the words of Scripture are meaningless to us, unless we put those words into daily practice, and that requires courage and commitment. In reality, we are being challenged by God to make the Gospels truly meaningful and inspirational to our lives. Otherwise The Bible, without readers who are inspired to act out the Word, is just another book on the shelf. There is no greater force to live by than by living courageously. Living courageously is not easy and is something we must pray for. Scripture tells us, in Mark 11:23, 24 that the power of prayer can move mountains. “….. Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Prayer gives us the courage, the strength and the endurance to live our lives, especially in times of fear and uncertainty. Our modern lives can be very hectic and overwhelming. We tend to live in an intense, technological haze of consumerism; advertising and entertainment. We are so busy “making a life” that we have no time to truly live. Often we seem like “human doings” rather than “human beings”. How do we create some space and time for ourselves just to become quiet; to be still and to reflect on what truly matters? Meditation is an ancient practice that helps us to go inward and become still. “Be Still and Know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 Stillness is the foundation of the soul and the language of the Holy Spirit. This audio listening experience will include a meditation or reflection to support you as you strive to live courageously.
