Description

We are now in Tehilim 52,9 הִנֵּ֤ה הַגֶּ֗בֶר לֹ֤א יָשִׂ֥ים אֱלֹהִ֗ים מָ֫עוּזּ֥וֹ וַ֭יִּבְטַח בְּרֹ֣ב עׇשְׁר֑וֹ יָ֝עֹ֗ז בְּהַוָּתֽוֹ Behold the man who does not put his strength in God. He relies on the tremendous amount of wealth, he relies on what he has. Rav Saadia Gaon says, he relies on what he has. He takes his strength, not in God, but in his possessions, in what he has. I saw an interesting commentary that the root of the word Havato is Hoveh which means the present . He takes his strength in the present. When person doesn't rely on God, he’s great as long as everything stays the same; when the present remains the present, when there's no change in the situation. Once change comes, he loses everything, because he was relying on his wealth. That was the constant. He was relying on his fame and fortune. That was the constant. When the constant changes, he's lost. I once heard from Rav Moshe Shapiro, the great mashpia in Yerushalayim, that the Jewish people count to the moon, and the goyim count by the sun. What's the difference? He says that the sun is constant. Every day it comes up and goes down and comes up and goes down and never changes. The word Shana from Shoneh / Sheni , it just keeps on repeating itself. He says, if we were to wake up one morning and see that the sun wasn't there, it's over. If the sun's not there, it’s not coming back. It's a constant. And when that constant goes away, it's not coming back again. It's gone. And you fall never to rise again. Whereas the moon comes and goes and comes and goes. It's not a constant. It has its ups and downs. The Jewish people don't count to the sun. We're not relying on one external constant factor in our nature. We're relying on Hashem. He's our constant. It's not a natural constant. Therefore, there will be ups and there will be downs, but we will still remain. The one that relies on his wealth, on the constant, is the one that is going to be in trouble when things change. There’s a great story about a Baal bitachon who wasn't flustered by something that changed. It was told to me by the man himself. But we need a little background on how certain companies run first. Many apparel manufacturers manufacture products that they create for somebody else. They buy a license, or a label and produce goods with that label. For example, Disney sells the Disney license and people make pajamas that say Disney on it. They're not Disney, they're a pajama maker. You're buying it because it says Disney on it. Of course, Disney wants to make sure these people know how to make pajamas so that their name will remain good, but Disney does not manufacture pajamas or jewelry or any of the like. They just own their brand that they license out to others. That's the key to some businesses. Their success is due to the successful licenses they have. There are more successful licenses, like Nike, and there are cheaper licenses, like Buster Brown, or Betty Crocker. This man had a Disney license and he had been selling very well to Walmart. Then one day he had an appointment at Walmart to present to them, when lo and behold, it was time to to renew his contract with Disney and they said, “ Sorry, we sold our contract to somebody else .” What would he do now? He had an appointment with Walmart and nothing to sell. Normally, someone that has a change like that doesn't know what to do. But this man was a Baal Bitachon , so he called his rabbi, who advised him to go ahead, and keep the appointment But he had nothing to sell! It would be pretty embarrassing to go there with nothing to sell. On the plane on the way there, he saw somebody that he knew. He sat down and talked to him, and asked him about business and what he was doing. The man said, “ Oh, I just got a new license.” “ That's nice. What'd you get? ” He said, “ I got Dr. Seuss, the Cat in the Hat. America loves reading.” Okay, great. So he asked, “ Do you have anything that you could share with me?” “ Only a notepad that has a picture of
