Description

We are now in Tehilim 55, 24: וְאַתָּ֤ה אֱלֹהִ֨ים ׀ תּוֹרִדֵ֬ם ׀ לִבְאֵ֬ר שַׁ֗חַת אַנְשֵׁ֤י דָמִ֣ים וּ֭מִרְמָה לֹא־יֶחֱצ֣וּ יְמֵיהֶ֑ם וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־בָּֽךְ But You Hashem blow them into the well of destruction, men of bloodshed and deceit. They will not live out half their days. But as for me, I will rely on You . The obvious question is, what is the connection of the first half of the pasuk, with David Hamelech praying for the destruction of these men of bloodshed and conceit, to him then saying, and I rely You ? The Ibn Ezra says, I rely on You means he relies on Hashem to live out a full life. They are men of bloodshed. They shouldn't live half their days, yet I shall live a full life, and I rely on You for that. David Hamelech did live a full 70 years. The Mishna in Pirkei Avot discusses the students of Bilam versus the students of Avraham Avinu. Avraham has a good eye, a humble spirit, and a humble soul. On the other hand, the students of Bilam the Rasha have an evil eye, they are haughty and they chase desire. The Gemara says, concerning the students of Bilam the Rasha, “ Hashem you should take them down to the wells of destruction …” and quotes our pasuk. The commentary Tiferet Yisrael discusses this contrast of וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־בָּֽךְ I rely on You: Sometimes the students of Bilam the Rasha, despite chasing desires and honor, seem to live a good life, while the Sadik doesn't seem to have those things, in his humble approach. To this, David Hamelech says, וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־בָּֽךְ I rely on You. You are my ultimate Benefactor and everything I have from You, I appreciate, even if I don't live that flamboyant life. The Magen Avot says, וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־בָּֽךְ I rely on You means that Through my bitachon I'll be saved from Gehinom. Those wicked people go down to Beer Shachat, which refers to Gehinom, but I rely on You. Due to my reliance, I will be saved from Gehinom and end up in Gan Eden. The Midrash Shmuel on Pirkei Avot quotes from the sefer Lev Avot that says, “This doesn't mean that they're not going to live out their lives. It means that, from all their days, they don't give half of it to You. There's a concept of half for God and half for you . They don't give a part of their time to You, God, they don't give any of their time to You. But David Hamelech contrasts that, וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְ טַח־בָּֽךְ I rely on You ( and this is an important few words), “Consistently, without a moment of interruption.” David Hamelech says of himself, My bitachon is a constant. It's not that I rely on You when I have a problem or I rely on You when I have a challenge . No- I don't just give part of my life. It's a constant reliance. That's what's going to get me to Gan Eden. That's going to give me all of my benefits. וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־בָּֽךְ Our final explanation is from the Chatam Sofer that says, How do I protect myself from committing sins like these people? What's going to guarantee that I'm going to stay on the right path and not stumble? The answer is, for the one who wants to purify himself, the angels of Hashem will help you out. They will give you extra help to get you to the proper place. As it says, God will send His help from the holy places. That's what it means, וַ֝אֲנִ֗י אֶבְטַח־בָּֽךְ says the Chatam Sofer ( Devarim 12,5), I rely on You that You're going to help me stay on the path. You're going to help me remain dedicated to You. So, we have many beautiful explanations of what David Hamelech’s bitachon is, vis-a-vis the wicked people of his time, Doeg and Achitofel. Number one , I rely on You that I will live out a full life. Number two, I rely on You that You're my benefactor, even though I don't have the seemingly wonderful life of the wicked. Number three, I rely on You to save me from Gehinom. I rely on You constantly and I rely on You, and I know I will remain on the proper path. Have a wonderful day.
