Description

Our next pasuk of Bitachon is from from Iyov 39,11: הֲֽתִבְטַח־בּ֭וֹ כִּֽי־רַ֣ב כֹּח֑וֹ וְתַעֲזֹ֖ב אֵלָ֣יו יְגִיעֶֽךָ׃ Can you rely on it with all of its strength and give all your toil over to it Iyov is going through different animals, and now he talks about an animal called the Re’em . The Re’em is the largest of animals, mentioned in the Gemara in Masechet Avodah Zara 3B. When discussing parnassa, it says, Hashem gives parnassa to whole world, from the horns of the Re’em, to the smallest of creatures. So the Re’em is the example of the largest of creatures. Additionally, the Gemara in Masechet Zevachim 113B mentions the Re’em when it questions how the Re’em got on the Teva . Some say they put just his head or nose in. Regardless, this is a huge animal, and it symbolizes tremendous strength in creation, and tremendous force. Iyov is saying, “ Are you going to rely on forces and energy that you think you’ll somehow be able to harness, to take your load or your work off of you?” That’s the simple explanation of the pasuk, which we can apply in more modern-day terms. The world is full of energy. For years, Niagara Falls was an unharnessed energy. It's an energy in the world, but we needed Hashem to give us the ability to harness it. One day, someone came up with the understanding of how to harness that energy, using water mills or whatever, to harness that energy. Electricity was an energy in the world from day one, but never harnessed until recently. So Iyov is saying, don't think that you're just going to rely on the forces of energy in the world to take off your load and your work. It doesn't work that way. Let’s apply this to technology. We think that the more technology we harness in the world, the better off we're going to be. But we see that people only get weaker with technology. We're not getting stronger. We’re becoming weaker people. Everybody knows what technology is doing to our mental health, what it's doing to an array of systems that are not getting better, they're getting worse. People rely on eventually finding the cure for aging. But as human beings, we can’t rely on the hidden forces of nature to reveal things and think that's going to solve our problems. We can't possibly solve any of our problems, regardless of what force of nature we harness, because ultimately the One to rely on is Hashem. Don't think you can solve your problems by harnessing these forces of nature. That was the message of Iyov, using the Re’em, the most extreme powerful force of his time. It’s interesting that God didn’t allow the Re’em , and similarly the Levyatan , to cohabitate, because they would destroy the world. We think that we'll rely on these great forces. But these great forces, if let loose, will only destroy the world. In my analogy, the technology of today is the Karnei Reemim , let loose, that we think we're going to harness and save the world, but actually, we are better off leaving it sterile rather than destroying the world. It says that God slaughtered one Levyatan and left the other one alive. And there’s a fascinating Midrash brought down by Chida, in his sefer Midbar Kedemot ( ק , 12), that says that Re’emim are a kosher animal. One is in the east and one is in the west, and once in every 70 years they cohabitate. After the female becomes pregnant, she kills the male. She gives birth to twins- one male, one female- and then she dies. Then the two separate, one to the east, one to the west. In that way, there are only two in existence at any given time. The Chida says he found this on an ancient manuscript. Although its an unknown Midrash, the point is that God did not want these tremendous forces to be harnessed and used. It would destroy the world. That's what Hashem is telling Iyov. It's a fascinating concept: Don't rely on those forces. הֲֽתִבְטַח־בּ֭וֹ כִּֽי־רַ֣ב כֹּח֑וֹ וְתַעֲזֹ֖ב אֵלָ֣יו יְגִיעֶֽךָ׃ Do you think you're going to rely on it, because of it's great strength, and remove all your hard work? Truly,
