Description

Welcome to, we are now in a pasuk in Iyov, 11,18: וּֽ֭בָטַחְתָּ כִּֽי־יֵ֣שׁ תִּקְוָ֑ה וְ֝חָפַרְתָּ֗ לָבֶ֥טַח תִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ You should be confident (or reliant) for there will be hope. You shall lie down, entrenched in security . What bitachon is this pasuk talking about? וּֽ֭בָטַחְתָּ כִּֽי־יֵ֣שׁ תִּקְוָ֑ה The commentaries, amongst them, the Gaon of Vilna, in his sefer Aderet Eliyahu explain that this is talking about the hope for Olam Haba . The sefer Yesodei HaIkarim , a commentary on the Torah in Parashat Pekudei from a Rabbi Yitzhak Danzig, printed in the early 1900s, quotes a Midrash Raba in Bereshit 62,2: When Rav Abahu passed away, he saw a vision of 13 rivers of balsam oil, a certain type of perfume. And he said, “These are all mine? And I thought I toiled for naught!” The Midrash says on that , “When a Sadik leaves this world, God shows them their reward.” Furthermore, it quotes different rabbis, who, on their deathbeds, had visions and said pesukim . One of the rabbis said a pasuk, “ In Him, my heart will delight because I relied on His great name. ” Another rabbi said, “ All those that seek refuge in You will be happy. ״ So it’s interesting that there's a connection between the person’s Bitachon and their final happiness. ‘You'll laugh on the final day ,’ means on the day that a person passes away, he will laugh because he will see the great reward that is waiting for him. But what does this have to do with bitachon? Why are these rabbis mentioning bitachon specifically? And similarly, our pasuk says, there is hope and you'll lie down, entrenched in security , which means when you pass away, you'll be secure. In order to explain, we have to understand what Rav Abahu meant when he said, “ All l this is for me? I thought I worked for nothing!” We say, “ We shouldn't work for nothing. ” I heard an explanation from my cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Schwartzbard, quoting from sefer Otzrot HaTorah, and quoting from a patient that heard it in the name of Rav Ephraim Shapiro: A lot of times in life we work on projects and put forth effort and nothing comes from it. How many shidduchim did we attempt to set up? How many patients did we try to heal? How many people did we try to bring close to religion? In any area that you work, quite often you put forth effort and but it doesn't seem that you see success. Rav Abahu thought the same. I wasn't successful in so much that I did. But then, in the final day, he saw that he was being rewarded for all his hard work, even though he didn't actually get there. But there's a catch. The person has to do the act with Bitachon. I'm relying on Hashem. I'm hoping to You for success and even when it doesn't work out, I'll still get rewarded. But a big chunk of that reward comes from the reliance that you brought out through the challenges and through the situation. That's this important lesson. וּֽ֭בָטַחְתָּ כִּֽי־יֵ֣שׁ תִּקְוָ֑ה / If you rely on Hashem, there is hope. You don't know what's waiting for you. . וְ֝חָפַרְתָּ֗ לָבֶ֥טַח תִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ / You shall lie down, entrenched in security means in the world to come. This is one of our fundamental beliefs- the belief in Olam Haba, the world to come. That's our whole life. Mesilat Yesharim says that is everything; everything surrounds our Olam Haba, and that needs bitachon as well. So B’Ezrat Hashem, Ki YeshTikva/ there is hope. Have a wonderful day.
