Description

‘We have the tools today to help and guide people at their points of need and then measure success based on the efficacy – to what extent we helped them to achieve their desired goals at the point they needed it ‘
In this episode, Lucinda is in conversation with David James, Chief Learning Officer for Looop.
They discuss the changes in expectations from employees and stakeholders and how L&D can change to get closer to the point of work, helping people when they really need help.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

We need to support people effectively at the point of need when they are meeting new challenges, situations and through periods of transition.
I’m challenging learning and development, through my posts to expect more from themselves and their vendors.

Let’s understand what our users are trying to do, solve the real problems in the most efficient way and benchmark ourselves with the achievement of those goals.
Start with why you are doing this in the first place instead of ‘this is the right thing to do’
Beginning from an evidence base means every action and improvement you make is impacting on the people you are doing this for.
It's vital to look at specifics and understand what people are trying to do in their roles.
Once we have their questions, situations and challenges we can address those specifically and get individuals the support they need at the right point to ensure they can be more competent fulfilling the role they are in.

How can you guide and support people to get the results they want? if we can understand what people’s action learning sets are we can help people within the context of their job
The success of any individual is centred around the expected and behaviours and rewards of the organisation.
In identifying distinct groups and understanding specifically what they need to know and which skills are required the L&D team can take an overview and provide the nudges required to continue development.
We have to place ourselves in their shoes and in their situations to help them with their challenges.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Give me the learning I want, when I want it’
‘As L&D we need to wear multiple hats-  being artists, scientists, detectives and visionaries’
‘Drawing a line between the data and the solution’
‘They didn’t know what to do next, what to say to this new team in front of them’
‘For technical people promoted into management roles, it’s the equivalent of a career change’
