Description

Every year, wildfires burn across the United States, and a growing number of people are living where wildfires are a real risk. According to NFPA, every year, wildfires burn across the U.S., and more and more people are living where wildfires are a real risk. Nearly 45 million homes and more than 72,000 U.S. communities are now at risk. In today’s podcast, we sit down with Allyson Watson, a burn survivor of the 2003 San Diego Wildfires. Allyson shares her journey as a survivor, wildfire prevention tips, and advice for the survivors of the recent Maui wildfires. About Allyson WatsonAllyson Watson is a burn survivor from the 2003 San Diego Wildfires. She lost her home, and was burned 2nd and 3rd degree over 86% of her body while trying to evacuate. She lost all 10 fingers, part of her upper lip, the tip of her nose, as well as her left ear due to the injuries. More devastating than her injuries; her 16 year old sister Ashleigh, was killed in the blaze.Allyson has since rallied from that loss, went back to college, began a career in homeless outreach, got married, and is now the mother of two boys. In her spare time, Allyson volunteers as a motivational speaker, hoping to educate the community on fire prevention and preparedness. She also enjoys photography, horseback riding, days at the beach, and any activities involving family. Interested in getting connected with Allyson?
