Description

For nearly 20 years, Dennis Gardin referred to himself as a ‘victim’ of his injury, rather than a survivor. It wasn’t until he was asked by a friend to visit someone with a burn injury in the hospital that he began his transformation from victim to survivor. Shortly after visiting his first-ever burn survivor, Dennis connected with a community of other survivors and began his journey to healing. In this episode, Dennis chats with us about his injury, what it was like to be a child burn survivor, how his own perceptions led his journey of recovery, and how he overcame adversities to become the person he is today. Dennis GardinDennis Gardin burned over 70% of his body in a horrific gasoline explosion as a child, resulting in extensive hospitalization, dozens of surgeries, and years of therapy and rehabilitation. Prolonged pain and profound disfigurement caused him to hide in isolation for years in the confines of his parent’s home.Dennis has grown along his journey of self-discovery to become a successful businessman, professional speaker, ministrant, former television talk show host and radio personality, workshop facilitator, and consultant. He is currently privileged with the honor of serving as the Executive Director for the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation.Dennis hopes to inspire individuals to face their inner scars and self-limiting beliefs to begin creating an abundant, fulfilling life of purpose. Resources from the Show Learn more about the Georgia Firefighters Burn FoundationLearn more about Phoenix World Burn CongressRead Peer Support is PowerfulLearn more about Peer SupportLiving with Burn Scars and How to React to StaresThe Impact of Trauma on RelationshipsTools to Handle Questions and TeasingBecome a Phoenix SOAR Peer SupporterWhat to Expect: Getting Back Out ThereResources from Phoenix SocietyAbout NFSANFSA aims to protect lives and property through the advancement of fire sprinklers.
