This week, the College Football Playoff managers are convening for discussions. However, due to the uncertain future of the Pac-12, reaching a final decision on whether to allocate six or five spots for conference champions in the upcoming expanded field will prove challenging.
The CFP management committee, comprised of 10 conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director, will assemble on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Big Ten offices located just outside Chicago.
Since the last CFP meeting, Stanford and California have announced their departure from the Pac-12 to join the Atlantic Coast Conference next year. Nonetheless, Oregon State and Washington State are steadfast in their commitment to revitalizing the Pac-12.
The upcoming playoff season will witness an expansion from four teams to twelve. The consensus among managers is that the field should consist of the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large selections, irrespective of the league they represent.
However, this agreement was made prior to the recent turmoil caused by conference realignment within the Pac-12.
Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey remarked on the situation, stating, "Six and six worked when we initially made the decision, but circumstances have since evolved." The Pac-12 retains its Power Five conference status for the next two years as per the current CFP contract, leading to considerably higher revenue payouts compared to the Group of Five conferences.
The future of the Pac-12 remains uncertain, but it is evident that a new Pac-12, if it materializes, will not possess the same level of strength as the current iteration, as stated by Sankey.
