We are just two days away from the LSU Tigers opening up SEC play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs with an early 11am kickoff in Starkville. But if you thought you knew what to expect from the Bulldogs offense, think again.
The late, great Mike Leach brought the air raid offense to Mississippi State when he took over the head coaching job in 2020 and since then the Bulldogs could put up 400+ yards of offense through the air with quarterbacks dropping back nearly 50 times a game. It was a fun, electric offense to watch but the one caveat of the air raid is that it is rather one-dimensional; MSU, along with other air raid offenses, did not have a developed run game. But now that former defensive coordinator Zach Arnett has taken the reigns as the head ball coach in Starkville, the offense has taken on a new identity. Now, QB Will Rogers is only tossing the rock around 20 times a game. On the other hand, they rack up over 100 rushing yards per game. Call it a glow up or a glow down but either way, Mississippi State is a new offense.
So what does that mean for LSU? How can they defend an offense that clearly wants to commit to the run but also has a more than capable quarterback to air it out and throw the football along with a more developed ground game?
