Description

It's Normal People in Spanish.*** In Episode Five, “The Last Supper” our two leads KNOW they are in love and that is a whole “thing” that sits and swells between them. Falling in love is scary, just like the beginning of this episode. (01:36)*** Before we get to our couple at the restaurant, our guy is messing up his neatly organized closet and Kate and Carinn discuss the ways we represent (or misrepresent) ourselves to the outside world. (05:20) *** Our female lead says when I see him try to smile I see a scared little boy and this leads Carinn to an astonishing revelation about herself and vulnerability. Our minds are blown and there may be a tear shed. (10:17)*** We finally get to the part where the two of them get to the fancy restaurant and we start to see the playful push and pull between them and then the smoldering chemistry. Apparently listening is sexy as hell. (13:51)*** This episode brings the food porn to an elevated level, which got us talking about our own relationships with, and idiosyncrasies about, food. (18:54)*** We love the scene at the table where she tells him they have to be patient with each other. Their wounds are becoming slightly exposed and their past hurts are coming to the surface. And from the pain comes pure, smoldering fire between these two! (22:24)*** The two are officially in love -- BOOM -- it has hit them both. But this episode ends with us wondering what it will all mean going forward. (31:23)*** Episode 6, “The Perfect Croissant Doesn’t Exist,” starts off with dueling bad dreams for our two leads who have spent the night together finally. When you fall in love you feel your greatest fears. (34:27)*** After sleeping together, the indecision sets in for her as to what she really wants and then we get flashbacks to the their sex scenes from the night before. Carinn declares this her kind of “TV sex” and Kate couldn’t agree more! It is total fire. But their use of food in the sex scenes has Carinn worried and Kate confused. (41:00)*** It isn’t all sex, their intimacy continues and we love that just as much. Things quickly get trippy when they introduce some hallucinogenic drugs into the mix. Listening to them sing “Barbie Girl” in American accents is priceless. Trying to guess where these last two episodes will take us already has us getting sad. Titles in the series (100)

In Pop Fiction Women we deep-dive into the complicated women of books, movies and TV shows, along with the women that bring them to life behind the scenes. Think Fleabag and Phoebe Waller Bridge, Normal People and Sally Rooney, and so much more. In each episode you can expect us to: * Break down the protagonist as we ask what makes her complicated? * Identify the best scenes, which can mean sweetest, funniest, or most badass. Anything we love. * Recount the cringiest scenes. The ones that make you squirm. Sometimes it’s self-sabotage, sometimes it’s growth, but it’s always part of the process of becoming our complicated selves. * Play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Rider’s Heathers, we discuss how these characters got to be the way they are. * “What She Said” - the segment where we scour every essay and interview with the women behind the scenes and share some of our favorite first person quotes. Real life is as interesting as fiction here. * Look into our crystal ball and ponder where these characters are six months later and five years later. Typically, Kate gets very real and Carinn gets buck wild. * Provide a takeaway, aka that part in the podcast where we try to sound deep. We leave you with some parting wisdom, challenge each other with thought-provoking questions inspired by the work, and urge you to “stay complicated.”
