Description
Women In Sustainability Series, episode 3.?
Introducing Cate Brown, Founder of Cate Brown Design, a design studio located in New York that creates sustainably sourced, hand-selected objects of finery to make luxury pillows for clients around the world.
The team at Cate Brown Design are offering an alternative to the fast-fashion approach to homewares and celebrating reclaimed luxury craft.
You might ask ‘Why is it essential to repurpose or reuse materials, especially for pillows?’
In the United States alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste—equivalent to 85% of all textiles—end up in landfills every year.
Fast fashion has created an industry focused on quantity over quality—with consumers buying pieces that they only wear a handful of times and then end up in our already-overfilled landfills.
Something needs to be done to address the environmental impacts fast fashion is having on our planet.
We love showcasing champions who creatively solve this challenge by making unique designs and products from materials that already exist within the industry. Form curricular approaches from Sumedhaa at By.Sume for clothing to Cate Brown Design for luxury, handcrafted pillows.
With all their products designed in-house and produced by skilled seamstress Cate Brown, Cate Brown Design’s pieces are designed and made locally in Brooklyn, New York, and Vancouver.
With Cate’s products stocked in some of the best-known retail stores—and used in many hotels—her pillows are finding a new use for garments that otherwise would be discarded!
In this week’s episode, we speak with Cate Brown to learn about the environmental impacts fast fashion is having on our environment and how a more creative approach to circular designs is needed to address the problem. We also learn more about her design studio, her team, and the brand she has created.
