Description

Do you know if you are a generalist or a specialist? If you believe you are a generalist, you probably think of yourself as a jack of all trades. That is, someone who can step in and lead or do the job, regardless of sector or industry. You may be surprised to learn that you may not be exactly a generalist. On the other hand, if you are worried that you’re a specialist, your niche is too narrow, and you may not be able to advance in your career, guess what? You may also be mistaken!
People think of generalists are jacks of all trades, and specialists are experts. But this may be a very narrow and limited view of the two labels. It all depends on the context, and this is where I see the mistake being made by professionals who try to explain themselves as generalists or specialists to recruiters and employers. Most define themselves as one of the other, and believe that whatever they think they are is the wrong thing to be!
Listen to this episode to find out more about these two labels, how and when to use them, and when it's best to avoid them altogether!

This is a podcast for well-informed job hunters and career enthusiasts. Hi, my name is Renata Bernarde. in 2018, I left my job to help others get their careers on track. My love for coaching started at a very young age. Over time, I realized that many professionals don’t know how recruitment & selection works, which negatively impacts their career progression. I also coach the Job Hunting Made Simple program, teaching professionals the steps and framework to make career advancement simpler and less stressful. I live in Melbourne, drink too much coffee, and some say I can talk underwater :). Please subscribe, leave me a rating, write a review, and let the people you care about know this podcast exists!
