Description

Many women believe that they can wait as long as they want to start a family. This belief is perpetuated by famous stars in the public eye who are becoming pregnant later in life. What the public does not realize about many of these women - who are pregnant in their 40s  - is that they are often using a donor egg.
It is a common belief for many women that if they delay childbearing or want to have children later in life it will generally be easy. Yes of course some individuals can get pregnant later in life (and it often happens randomly), but for the majority of women this is not the reality. Some women also believe that going to a fertility center will guarantee that they have a child. Yes, of course fertility specialists can help you to have a baby, but they cannot change how healthy your eggs are or the amount that you have left in your ovaries.
As women age the quantity and quality of their eggs goes down. This aging process begins around the age of 35. You are born with a certain number of eggs and when you begin to ovulate your body chooses the best eggs towards the beginning of your life. These eggs are chromosomally normal and healthy. As you become older, your egg quality and quantity declines. There are also less chromosomally normal eggs in your older years which can cause spontaneous abortions or miscarriages once you do get pregnant.
There are excellent new tests that allow you to check your ovarian reserve — meaning how many eggs you have left. One of these tests is an AMH value or anti-mullerian hormone. This is a hormone that is released from the tiny eggs a woman still has in her body. As the level goes down, your egg reserve also goes down. You can do it any day of the month, and it’s very good for giving you an idea of your reserve. The AMH is the most accurate and convenient test currently available to check a woman’s egg supply or ovarian reserve.
