Description

Dan and Pat discuss momentum and how to regain it (especially in fitness) after the holidays, living the resume life vs. the eulogy life, and whether winning the lottery is a blessing or a curse.  Also, listener questions. ... Resume Building Versus Eulogy Building By: Dan John I had one of those odd things happen to me recently: I had an email asking for my resume/vita. It was the same day I was preparing to speak at my brother's funeral. Now, there is nothing new here: other brighter minds have discussed this before me, but I couldn't ignore the reality. In life we have two kinds of documents: Resumes Eulogies The Resume is that wonderful few pieces of paper that tells the world you are able to take on the task of junior senior manager of small things at the wingernut factories. You got the degree, you sat in the chair, you paid your dues and avoided imprisonment for the most part. And, good for you! You never got caught! Eulogy literally means "the good story." In a eulogy, people might miss the degrees from the universities, the committees and the councils. What they will talk about is when you "showed up," helped out and made a difference. At my brother's funeral, one of my cousins said to me: "I need to volunteer more." Five words. In those five words, Jane told me the impact of Phil's funeral upon her. I need to volunteer more. Showing up and making a difference doesn't go on the resume. It goes in the eulogy. The resume is nice for slapping down on a desk and telling a person or two you are worthy of a position. The eulogy tells the world why you should never be forgotten. Certainly, focus on both. But you should know which one is more important. ...
