Description
This acid base disorder requires multiple steps! So, make sure to pay close attention to this one. But, what are common metabolic acidosis disorders? Well, everyone jumps to MUDPILES. The first step, however, is to determine if there's an increased anion gap or not. Remember, the body already has a normal anion gap (difference between anions and cations). Clinical pearl for all you Medgeeks: the anion gap is affected by albumin and this is the most abundant unmeasured anion in the body. Therefore, if albumin is low, then the normal anion gap in the body is lowered. For everyone 1 unit decrease in the albumin from 4, then the normal anion gap drops by 2.5. If there's an increased anion gap - then we think MUDPILES So let's jump right in to metabolic acidosis! - Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/medgeeks - Follow us on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/medgeeksinc - Ace your exams: https://learn.medgeeks.co/ - We'd love to hear your feedback: team@medgeeks.co - This podcast should not be used in any legal capacity whatsoever, including but not limited to establishing standard of care in a legal sense or as a basis for expert witness testimony.
