    Below is a creed, purportedly formulated by the early Christian church against Hebrew practices.

    I renounce all customs, rites, legalisms, unleavened breads & sacrifices of lambs of the Hebrews, and all other feasts of the Hebrews, sacrifices, prayers, aspersions, purifications, sanctifications and propitiations and fasts, and new moons, and Sabbaths, and superstitions, and hymns and chants and observances and Synagogues, and the food and drink of the Hebrews; in one word, I renounce everything Jewish, legalism, custom and rite; and above all he who is expected by all the Jews in the shape and dress of Christ, I renounce Anti-Christ, and join myself to the true Christ and God. And I believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; the holy and consubstantial and individual Trinity; I profess the dispensation where one of the holy trinity, the Word of God took flesh and became man;... if I pretend to be a Christian and return to Jewish superstition, or shall be found eating with the Jews, or feasting with them, or secretly conversing and condemning the Christian religion instead of openly confuting them and condemning their vain faith, then let the trembling of Gehazi cleave to me, as well as the legal punishments to which I acknowledge myself liable. And may I be anathema in the world to come, and may my soul be set down with Satan and the devils.

    Subsequently special creeds were drafted, to which the Christian would have to swear such as:

    I accept all customs, rites, legalism, and feasts of the Romans, sacrifices. Prayers, purifications with water, sanctifications by Pontificus Maxmus (high priests of Rome), propitiations, and feasts, and the New Sabbath Sodei (day of the Sun,), all new chants and observances, and all the foods and drinks of the Romans. In other words, I absolutely accept everything Roman, every new law, rite and custom, of Rome, and the New Roman Religion.

    INTRODUCTION

    What is the Biblical meaning of Shalom or Peace? According to The Blue Letter Bible Dictionary,"Šālôm"(shaw-lome’), (H7965), meaning, completeness (in number); safety, soundness (in body), welfare, health, prosperity, peace, quiet, tranquility, contentment, friendship; of human relationships; with ELOHIM especially in covenant relationship; peace from war, peace (as adjective). As we can see, shalom means peace, but it is way more profound than what we typically think of; we generally think of it as the absence of war, the absence of trouble. However, it is holistic, all-encompassing; physical, spiritual, emotional, and social; it has a sense of wholeness, completeness, or completion. It is what the prophets wrote about: the lion and the lamb laying together; that is perfect peace; that was shalom. But what about the peace in John 14? What type of peace is that? Who is that peace? How do we receive that peace?

    In John 14, YAHUSHUA is sitting down with His disciples who have spent almost every moment of every day, for the last three years or so, with Him. He knows He is about to leave them; He is about to die; rise from the dead and ascend into heaven. He knows that these men are going to continue on this journey, and He will be physically separated from them. So, He is preparing them with this promise, and He is also giving it to us, all these centuries later. Here is what He promised, according to John 14:27, it says, ²⁷ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. YAHUSHUA is saying, I will give you peace, but the peace I give is a peace that the world cannot give. What does that mean? Some believe the world’s peace is a form of escapism. YAHUSHUA says that my peace goes beyond understanding, beyond what the world gives. His peace is not the absence of bad circumstances; His peace is with us in the midst of this broken, messed-up world, in the midst of the fractured circumstances. Paul wrote about it in his letters to YAHUSHUA’s followers in Philippi; he said, this peace that YAHUSHUA offers is something that we cannot even begin to understand or grasp; it is beyond our understanding.

    We will camp here for a while as we attempt to discern what this peace, the shalom, is truly about. We know that for us to receive the fullness of the Messiah, we need peace. But, how do we get it? What prevents us from having it, or what disturbs it and causes us to lose our peace, our Shalom? What can take away or steal your peace? YAHUSHUA’ s admonition to us was that He would give us peace differently from the way the world gives it.

    ​​​INSIGHT ON THE NOTION OF SHALOM

    Peace in a world not his; Shalom in a world not his. That is where we are right now; we are in a world not His, and we are going to go through many things in our world that are disturbing and stealing our Shalom. We are challenged in the area of having peace in our lives, and we must examine it. How do we get this peace? What prevents us from having it? What steals it from us? In the Brit Hadassah (New Testament), notice the word that is used in the greeting and sometimes at the end of the letters, the salutation used is peace, and that word peace/Shalom can be found 19 times. We are not going to examine all of the letters; however, we will show that we have not received the fullness of the Messiah if we are still afraid and we do not have peace. Let us look at a few of the beginnings of the letters to see how it is worded. Go to Romans 1:1-4; it reads, ¹ Paul, a servant of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of ELOHIM, ² (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) ³ Concerning his Son YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach our Adonai, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; ⁴ And declared to be the Son of ELOHIM with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:... He establishes his credentials and who he is talking about before saying anything else. He is an apostle, and he talks about things promised by the prophets. He is talking about the one who came from the seed of David according to the flesh, the designated Son of ELOHIM, YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, the Master of us.

    Let us continue, Romans 1:5-6, it reads, ⁵ By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: ⁶ Among whom are ye also the called of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach.... So, he has established his credentials, and he is now showing that he is talking to the ones He has called; He is not talking to everybody. Read now, the next verse, Romans 1:7, which reads, ⁷ To all that be in Rome, beloved of ELOHIM, called to be saints. Again, we have established, who is speaking, why he is speaking, what authority, and who he is talking to. Read what he has to say, ... Grace to you and peace from ELOHIM our Father, and the Master YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach. He starts with a desire that there be favor and peace from ELOHIM. Notice he says, ...peace from ELOHIM.... Now, go to 1 Corinthians 1:1-2, it reads, ¹ Paul called to be an apostle of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach through the will of ELOHIM, and Sosthenes our brother, ² Unto the church of ELOHIM which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Messiah YAHUSHUA, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach our Adonai, both theirs and ours: Skip down to Corinthians 1:3, it reads, ³ Grace be unto you, and peace, from ELOHIM our ABBA, and from the Master YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach. We see here his desire for this group.

    Go now to 2nd Corinthians 1:1-2, it tells us, ¹ Paul, an apostle of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach by the will of ELOHIM, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of ELOHIM which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: ² Grace be to you and peace from ELOHIM our ABBA, and from the Master YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach. We see this greeting numerous times, twice in Ephesians, chapter 1, and again in chapter 6. In Philippians, chapter 1, Colossians, chapter 1, 1st Thessalonians, chapter 1, 2nd Thessalonians, chapter 1, 1st, and 2nd Timothy, you get the point. Now, let us move to 1st Peter 1:1, it reads, ¹ Peter, an apostle of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. We know who he is talking to; he is an apostle establishing credentials. ² Elect according to the foreknowledge of ELOHIM the ABBA, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. So, now he is saying grace and peace be multiplied to you; that is a desire. Take note that Paul, in certain places, and here, Peter, link together the idea of obedience. Peter repeats it in 2nd Peter but, we established that point. Let us go to 2nd John 1:1-3; it reads, ¹ The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; ² For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us forever. ³ Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from ELOHIM the Father, and from the Master YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. Again, there is that, peace, from ELOHIM; peace, from the Father.

    Turn now to the book of Jude 1-2, it reads, ¹ Jude, the servant of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by ELOHIM the Father, and preserved in YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, and called: ² Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. Now, let us go to Revelation 1:1-4, it reads, ¹ The Revelation of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, which ELOHIM gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: ² Who bare record of the word of ELOHIM, and of the testimony of YAHUSHUA Ha’Mashiach, and of all things that he saw. ³ Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. ⁴ John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne. Nineteen times in the Brit Hadassah, we get this phrase, ...peace from ELOHIM, or peace from the Father, ...peace from YAHUSHUA. There is an encouragement that we should have peace, and it should be increased, yet we find ourselves today lacking peace. We lack Shalom; we struggle with it; we have a hard time with it. So, how do we get it and what prevents us from having it, or what disturbs it and causes us to lose our Shalom? What can take away, steal your peace? We will show you why so many Hebrews have lost their peace, how that happens, and why that should not occur. What are the necessary things to do so that your, peace does not go in the wrong direction? Let us go to John 14:27, which tells us, ²⁷ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Here we have a statement from YAHUSHUA, and He makes a clear, understandable statement. He says, Peace I leave you... in case you did not get it; He says, ...my peace I give unto you. Then we wonder, why do we not have it? He says, because I do not give it as the world gives. What does that mean? When reading that verse, one must ask, how does the world give? How would you do it if you took your Bible and gave it to someone? You would hand it to them. Now, He will give us peace, but He will not hand it to us.

    In the case of you giving your Bible to someone, you could give them access to yours until they could make a copy of it. You have to do something; you are showing them how to have their own copy, you are not going to give them yours. So, when YAHUSHUA says, ...my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth. What we have to figure out is how do we receive His peace? After studying all the scriptures that have the word peace in them; and comparing them to scriptures that challenged peace, verses that contained words like worried, afraid, doubt, sadness, and fear. We discovered that there were thousands of verses that needed to be whittled down to figure out how all of this relates. We get this verse, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you... that is a pivotal verse for what we are dealing with; it is one of the keys, if not the key verse. Now, where do we go from here? Do we go backward from that verse or forward to complete the thought? When going backward, we end up in John 14:1, where He says, ¹ Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in ELOHIM, believe also in me. That seems to be according to the same theme; along with everything in between Let not your heart be troubled... and ...my peace I give to you... is connected. So, we know how far to go back because, before chapter 13, it does not continue the same thought. Remember, chapter 13 is the last supper. There is no need to go any further back than John 14:1 but, where do we go going forward? We know in John 14:1, He says, Let not your heart be troubled... but notice what it says in John 14:6. He said, ⁶ YAHUSHUA saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. He is the path to all; He is the way to peace, the way to life, and truth. That is part of our context here. Take a look at what it says in John 14:16, He says, ¹⁶ And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. Earlier, he told us that our hearts should not be troubled and believe ELOHIM. John also told us that He is the way to do that, He is the truth, He is life, and He will give us help. He is going to give us a helper. So then, as we advance to John 14:27, where He said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you... we continue from there but, where do we stop?

    When we go to John 15:4, it says, ⁴ Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. To paraphrase what we have read so far, He is saying, let not your heart be troubled, I am the way, I am going to send you a helper, I am going to give you my peace, and then He says, stay in me. Go to John 15:19; remember we are still looking for the stopping point. It tells us, ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. We are suffering; our peace is disturbed; our hearts are not supposed to be troubled. He says He is not going to give us peace the way the world does. Now, we know a bit more because we are not of the world. He says, ...ye are not of the world... who is He talking to? His disciples; His students; if we are followers of YAHUSHUA, and not of the world; we are in the world but, we are not of the world. Let us keep exploring; go to John 16:1, which reads, ¹⁶ These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. Recall what we examined in John 14:1 where it tells us your heart might be troubled; your peace might not be available at the point when we are stumbling. He said I have spoken to you, so you do not have to be offended. So, we cannot stop there; go to John 16:33, He says, ³³ These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. We could stop here, but look at what He says in John 17:15, He says, ¹⁵ I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. Here we have a prayer YAHUSHUA was praying to His Father. Look at John 17:1, where He says, ¹ These words spake YAHUSHUA, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee. It is His prayer. Again, John 17:15 says, ¹⁵ I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. We have to take it to the end.

    In John 17:26, it reads, ²⁶ And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. If we had the right authority, a structured relationship with the authority of the universe, we would not have our peace disturbed. We would not stumble; our hearts would never be troubled. So, we can stop here because in John 18:1, He says, ¹⁸ When YAHUSHUA had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. He was done; He finished the conversation. However, we still need to understand why He said these words. Were they to help us understand how to have peace? Return now to John 14:1 and let us explore and read all four chapters (John 14-17); we will see why He said these words were there to help us understand how to have peace.

    Remember, the context for His disciples was a disturbing event that was about to happen. He has already told them that He was going to be killed; He had washed their feet already in chapter 13. He is trying to get their attention, and they are wasting time arguing about who is the greatest; we see that in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, but not in John. Here we have the Last Supper, and John does not mention that detail. It is an interesting detail to leave out. Perhaps the reason why He washed their feet to show them that if they wanted to lead, they would have to be humble enough to be the lowest and wash feet. He showed them He is the highest power and the greatest servant; if you want to be in authority, humble yourself, learn to wash someone else’s feet. All of this is going on, and He says that He was going to lay down His life at the end of chapter 13 (John 13:33). He said there would be an event where you would feel the loss. Even now, people experience loss and longing for intimacy, the desire of wanting to be together as a group. He is telling them, look, you are with me now but, there will be a time when I will not physically be here. He says, let not your heart be troubled; there are going to be events that would cause their hearts to be troubled. But you should not have a troubled heart; again, that is the key.

    The things we go through in life seem big at the time, but most of us have read the Bible, and there is a thing coming called the Tribulation. Can what we are going through now compare to that event? Not even the slightest little measure. The Tribulation is the worst calamity of all time. Let us not be like the Apostles; do not act like He did not tell you and you do not understand what is coming. We have a book that tells us the Tribulation is coming; He tells us, let not your heart be troubled. He says, my peace I will give to you; you should not be afraid of what is coming. All of it is here to keep us from being afraid and having an anxious heart, stumbling, or anything troubling our heart. We should fully embrace everything that is coming. As a matter of fact, why should we focus on what is coming? YAHUSHUA was telling them, look, I am going to go but, I am going to send you a helper, and there will be good things coming after I go; if I do not go, then those things do not happen. I have to go, so when the next step in the process plays out; you have to find a way to embrace it. Everything that is happening is in the context of a much bigger picture, and the end of that picture is the Kingdom. The part that we all desire; the wiping away every tear, and there is nothing but joy. There will be nobody to disturb our peace and nobody to harass us. He tells us what the Kingdom will be like but, we have to embrace all the other stuff. He said, from this moment to then, stuff has to happen. The fact is that none of these things can be avoided because the heart of man is the heart of man, and the flesh is the flesh; it has to play out.

    The scenario He has seen; the beginning to the end; He knows where this is going, and He tells us in advance where it is going.
