INTRODUCTION
Let’s Write a New Story Together
On New Year's Day 2023, Diya and Sal decided to write a short story together, featuring a fictional character named Samantha who has become stranded on a deserted island. Diya typed directly to Samantha, who revealed her hidden talents and how she had learned to survive without her usual comforts. They decided to continue writing the story together, and Diya suggested that they could use Samantha's best friend Emily to rescue her.
The story highlights the shift towards a new reality that would never be the same for Diya and Sal. The story is based on the author's experience with tutoring his cousin Nadia, who needed help learning math. He started writing web-based math practice software called Khan Academy, which helped students remediate gaps in their knowledge and learn at their own pace. By 2009, Khan Academy had 50,000 monthly users, each hungry for academic help.
Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with over 250 employees that serves over 150 million learners in more than fifty languages around the world. The organization's long-held aspiration is to act as a tutor for every learner in the world, focusing on personalized learning and mastery learning. AI technology might become an important part of this solution, potentially emulating a real tutor. This story highlights the power of one-on-one learning and the potential of AI technology to revolutionize education.
The idea of using technology to help educate people has been a fascination for decades. Science fiction writers like Neal Stephenson and Isaac Asimov have imagined computers mimicking human intelligence, leading to real-life researchers working for over sixty years to make this vision a reality. In 1962, Robert Nealey played a game against an IBM 7094 computer, and in 1957, psychologist Frank Rosenblatt created Perceptron, the first artificial neural network.
AI has come a long way since then, driving some of the most common products and apps today, such as recommendation engines on movie streaming services and voice-controlled personal assistants like Siri and Alexa. AI has gotten so good at mimicking human behavior that we often cannot distinguish between human and machine responses. The computation power has developed enough to tackle systems approaching the complexity of the human brain, and recent breakthroughs in structuring and training these neural networks have allowed for better and faster training and more accuracy in how words and ideas connect based on training information.
The complexity and architecture of underlying models
are usually related to the complexity and architecture of the underlying model.
Large language models, such as GPT-4, are essentially big, powerful, albeit digital, word brains
trained on colossal amounts of information from books, articles, websites, and written material. They learn patterns, language, and context of how words, sentences, and paragraphs fit together.
In 2022, OpenAI, one of the groundbreaking research laboratories working in friendly artificial intelligence, wanted to discuss a potential collaboration with the author. The author was intrigued
