AI and its Impact on Writing: Friend or Foe?

Artificial intelligence is not a substitute for human intelligence; it is a tool to amplify human creativity and ingenuity.

    – Fei-Fei Li (qtd. in Galt)

Imagine a world where writer’s block becomes a relic of the past, where creative inspiration flows freely, and where research happens in a blink. This is the world promised by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of writing. But is AI a friendly assistant or a potential usurper of the writer’s throne? This chapter delves into the fascinating world of AI and its impact on writing, both fiction and non-fiction.

    Pretty good introductory paragraph, right?

Would you believe it was written by the Google Gemini AI software?

This book aims to examine the use of AI in writing as a tool for authors, writers, and students. It emphasizes the importance of human intervention when it comes to text generated by AI. Throughout this book, AI software—such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Grammarly generative AI—is used to create text samples, and the results are critiqued to underscore the fact that AI is a tool that will enhance human creativity, not replace it (Future). This book also gives insight into how generative AI works to create text.

The ultimate goal of this book is to showcase how AI can be used ethically, responsibly, efficiently, and thoughtfully as a digital writing assistant or co-writer.

It’s time to don your critical thinking caps as we demystify the new, powerful, and sometimes frightening world of generative AI software.

—John Searle, American philosopher (qtd. In Toews)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to machines that can think and act like humans, with the primary goal of thinking and acting rationally. It does this through machine learning with computer programs that make predictions based on their data. Generative AI is used to create (or generate) new materials—like writing, art, and music—with the goal of simulating these works. AI typically interacts with people by using natural language processing, enabling humans and computers to communicate using plain English phrases, terms, and questions.

Generative AI works by using raw data to generate statistically probable outputs when prompted…to create a new work that’s similar, but not identical, to the original data(What is). This means generative AI scans any and all documents it is given, digests them, and composes new documents containing information found in the originals. It essentially spins the information it finds to produce a brand-new document.

Large language model (LLM) AIs work by using an "algorithm…that tr[ies] to predict the next word in a
