INTRODUCTION

What is MidJourney?

Midjourney is a text-to-image AI that generates visually appealing images based on text prompts. Midjourney was created by an independent research lab based in San Francisco called Midjourney, Inc. The main founder behind this model is David Holz, a successful serial entrepreneur.

According to their website, Midjourney’s objective is to explore new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species

What sets Midjourney apart from other AI alternatives is its remarkable flexibility, allowing for multiple algorithms and custom parameters to produce a big variety of images.

Unlike several other AI art generators that work on browsers or through APIs, Midjourney currently works based on a Discord bot. In other words, to use the tool and to generate images from text, you need to do so through Discord.

At the time of writing book, the latest version of this model is Midjourney v5.2. This AI image-generation tool became insanely popular since it was released to the public.

While there are rumors of an upcoming API release, for now, we need to interact with Midjourney through their Discord Channel. Midjourney also released apps for iOS and Android, but for the best results I still recommend using MJ through Discord.

How to Use Midjourney’s Discord Bot

Step 1: Join the Discord

As highlighted in the Midjourney Quickstart guide , to get started with Midjourney we need to join the Discord channel here.

Step 2: Find a Newbies Channel

Once you’re in the Discord channel, you’ll find few channels for newcomers to test out the model.

Step 3: Create your first image with the /imagine Command

After you’ve found the #newbies channel, you can create your first AI-generated image by typing the /imagine command.

Next up, you can add a description of the image you want to create in the prompt field and hit enter for the Midjourney bot to start generating. Typically, it takes ~1 minute for the Midjourney bot to generate four image options.

Step 4: Process the Job

A Job is any action that uses the Midjourney bot. You can also use the /info command to check your current jobs running and remaining trial time. Here we’ve got four options for:

Step 5: Make variations of your image or upscale

After generating the 4 images, we see there are also two rows of buttons:

U buttons upscale the selected image

V buttions create slight variations of the selected image

and the 🔄 button reruns a Job

Let’s go ahead and upscale the bottom right image with U3:

Ta-daaa! Picture is ready!

Step 6: Save your image, favourite or upscale redo

To save an image you can just click on it to open it full size and right-click to save. On official website, you can easily save multiple artworks by enabling Select Mode, which is close to search and refresh button.

Step 7: Setup your own Discord server

Since you’re probably not going to want to see all the new images in the #newbies channel, you’re going to want to setup your own Discord server connected to Midjourney.

To do so, simply click the + sign on the left hand side to add a new server, and then head back to the Midjourney server and click on the Midjourney bot and then Add to Server

In my case, I even created multiple channels in the same discord, so it was easier to navigate through all the prompts and categories I have used – realistic images, macro, animals, watercolor, logo, sketch, patterns, etc.

Step 8: Upscaling images

I have tried multiple upscaling softwares, but most of them are free just for a limited number of images. My favourite is Upscayl, offering 6 different Upscaling Types: Real-Esgran, Fast Real-Esrgan, Remacri, Ultramix Balanced, UltraSharp and Digital Art). There is also the option for Batch Upscale, image upscale up to 4x and output file as: PNG, JPG and WEBP

Midjourney Prompts Guide

At first glance, Midjourney may appear quite intimidating, but with a few hours of experimentation, you’ll quickly find yourself creating astonishing images. Let’s take a closer look at the fundamental usage of Midjourney, techniques for crafting top-notch prompts, and my personal selection of X prompts that I have used for my artworks.

Basics

In the beginning, it’s best to maintain simplicity by describing your desired visuals. Gradually incorporate styles until it aligns with your desired outcome. You’ll likely lean towards either an artistic, illustrative style or a photorealistic style. However, the possibilities extend far beyond that, ranging from creating logos, sketches, tattoo designs, comic book art, children’s book illustrations, and more. The possibilities are endless, and the results are truly mind-blowing.

In creating a prompt, it is important to remember that Midjourney only pays attention to the first 60 words. So writing in full sentences may hurt you. Instead focus on complete phrases ordered like this:

[content type], [description - subject + adjectives], [style], [composition]

To check your default settings, type the command /settings. To view information about your account, type the command /info.

Basic Prompts

A basic prompt can be as simple as a single word, phrase or emoji

Advanced Prompts

More advanced prompts can include one or more image URLs, multiple text phrases, and one or more parameters

Useful commands for Midjourney

1. Aspect Ratios

--aspect, or —ar changes the aspect ratio of a generation. (default square —ar 1:1 )

—ar 2:3

—ar 3:2

—ar 9:16

—ar 16:9

2. Chaos changes how varied the results will be. Higher values produce more unusual and unexpected generations. –-chaos

3. No

—no Negative prompting, —no text would try to remove any letters from the image.

4. Seed

—seed The Midjourney bot uses a seed number to create a field of visual noise, like television static, as a starting point to generate the initial image grids. Seed numbers are generated randomly for
