It had been a long day at the office, and I was utterly exhausted. My boss, Rob, had noticed my fatigue and pulled me aside after the weekly team meeting.

Tom, is everything okay at home? he asked, concern etched across his face. You’ve seemed really run down lately.

I forced a reassuring smile. Yeah, it’s just the new baby keeping Lynn and me up at night. You know how it is.

Rob nodded sympathetically. Been there. It’ll get easier once the little one settles into a routine. But in the meantime, I need you at 100%. If you need to take a personal day to catch up on sleep, just let me know.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I grabbed my briefcase, eager to get home to Lynn, even though the thought of facing my wife filled me with dread.

The truth was, the baby wasn’t the source of my exhaustion. It was the guilt gnawing at me, the secret I was keeping from my wife.

Kelsey, my wife’s little sister, was pregnant. Again. And this time, there was no doubt the child was mine.

As I drove home, my mind raced with possibilities. Should I come clean to Lynn? Beg for her forgiveness? Or would it be better to keep up the charade, to spare her the pain of learning her own sister had betrayed her so profoundly?

I pulled into the driveway, steeling myself for the evening ahead. Lynn greeted me at the door, our newborn son Dustin cradled in her arms.

There’s my favorite guy, she cooed, leaning in to kiss me. I forced myself to return the gesture, my stomach twisting with guilt.

How was your day? I asked as I took the baby.

It was great, actually. Kelsey came over and watched the baby, which let me get some things done around the house.

I grunted in response to Lynn’s news about Kelsey watching the baby. The guilt twisted in my gut like a knife.

We’ll make sure to get her some good diapers and hand-me-downs when she has her baby, I said. I looked on the coat rack and saw Rose’s coat there. Oops, it looks like she left Rose’s coat here.

Actually, she said, Kelsey and Rose are still here watching TV in the living room. I told them they’re welcome to join us for dinner.

My heart sank. I really wasn’t in the mood to make small talk with Kelsey, not with this secret hanging over me. But I plastered on a smile and followed Lynn into the living room.

Kelsey was stretched out on the couch, Rose curled up beside her.
