Pathways to Professorship - William Webb

    introduction

    overview of the academic profession

Becoming an academic is a wonderful adventure that contains untold opportunities, possibilities, obstacles, and rewards. It is also a life characterized by the intertwining of teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and service to and engagement with the academic community. This book aims to provide a overview of what it means to be a part of the academic profession, setting the stage for your professional development journey.

    The Academic Ecosystem

To understand the professor job description, you need a sense of how the academic ecosystem works. Colleges and universities are complex organizations, each with its own mission, culture, and set of challenges.

As a college professor, you will be a part of this expertise-driven ecosystem, shaping its intellectual and community life. Here are a few key terms and definitions to consider as you contemplate how to become a professor:

Types of Academic Institutions: Colleges and universities run the gamut from large research universities to small liberal arts colleges to community colleges and trade schools. Each type of college or university has unique priorities, expectations, and methods of functioning, depending on its size and mission. For example, research universities typically place greater emphasis on obtaining grants and producing high-value, high-impact research while liberal arts colleges stress teaching and student engagement.

Academic Departments: Departments are the major units of organization at a college or university. A faculty member's department is the place he or she calls home at work, providing collegial interaction, professional affiliation and guidance. Departments are usually organized by discipline, such as biology, history, or electrical engineering. Departments control everything from curriculum to faculty research to the definition of student learning goals for each major.

    The Triad of Faculty Responsibilities

A college professor wears three hats: teaching, research, service. And, they alternate and overlap through a career. Each is a critical piece of career success, and well-being as an academic. When one of these areas gets out of balance, your career falters, job satisfaction flags, and promotion and tenure lag.

Traditionally, faculty members are engaged in the three-step waltz of being in the classroom, conducting research, and doing service to the institution and profession. If you don't want to waltz, think of them as three engines that propel your academic career.

Teaching- In the college classroom, we must be innovative, engaging and have the patience of a saint. We are not just imparting knowledge, we are teaching them how to learn, think critically, and be inspired to learn more.

Research - Essentially, it is our job to do good works, and for our research to be published, known and cited by others.

Service - Contributing to the wider academic community outside our institutions. Offering advice and service to communities and government as well as our non-profit professional and scholarly organizations.

    Navigating Academic Ranks

Academic careers are structured according to a rank system, and each rank carries with it certain expectations and a set of advancement criteria. It is important for you to be familiar with these ranks if you plan to pursue a career in academia.

Assistant Professor : This is usually the beginning rank for many careers in academia, and is the rank of faculty members on the tenure track. Such faculty members are in a probationary period during which they must make significant accomplishments in teaching, research, and service in order to be awarded tenure. The path to tenure can be extremely rewarding but also very demanding, as you establish your independent research line, enhancing your teaching portfolio, and forge relationships with colleagues in your field. Many faculty report that the period of assistant professor is the most stressful among the ranks.

Associate Professor : Faculty members who are successfully awarded tenure are promoted to the rank of associate professor. Promotion to this rank is indicative of a strong record of accomplishment in your field, and is a period during which many faculty members assume leadership roles that shape their departments and colleges.

Full Professor : Promotion from associate professor to full professor is a testament to a faculty member's sustained record of accomplishment as a scholar, teacher, and leader. Faculty members at the full professor rank frequently mentor junior faculty, lead large-scale research projects, and help shape the vision of their departments and colleges.

Non-Tenure Track Positions : In addition to the traditional tenure-track ranks, colleges and universities have also developed a variety of non-tenure-track faculty appointments, such as lecturers, clinical faculty, adjunct faculty, and research professors. These positions are critical to the academic ecosystem, providing flexibility and expertise in specific technical areas.

The Joys and Challenges of Academia

Being a college professor provides a wonderful combination of intellectual curiosity, creative expression, and the ability to shape students and society. However, it also presents its share of challenges.

Intellectual Liberty: Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of an academic career is the freedom to explore your intellectual passions. Whether it is engaging in new research, invention of new courses, or interdisciplinary collaboration, academia is a garden of creativity and innovation.

Students' Influence: Professors have the rare opportunity to shape their students' minds and futures. The role of adviser is fulfilling as you mentor students in their academic journey, excite them with torches and help them reach their full potential.

Balance of Work and Life: Maintaining equilibrium between the rigors of teaching, research, and service can be difficult. The academic calendar with deadlines, grading, grant submissions, and committee meetings is often chaotic. Effective time management, establishing parameters, and seeking support from colleagues and family are crucial factors to retaining a healthy work-life balance.

Managing Academic Politics: Academia, like any field, involves a considerable amount of politics and power relationships. To negotiate these, a measure of diplomacy, honesty, and an understanding of the institution's values -- not to mention a strong stomach -- are necessary. Constructive relations with colleagues and involvement in institutional governance are certainly beneficial.
