Types of Academic Institutions: Colleges and universities run the gamut from large research universities to small liberal arts colleges to community colleges and trade schools. Navigating Academic Ranks

Academic careers are structured according to a rank system, and each rank carries with it certain expectations and a set of advancement criteria. It is important for you to be familiar with these ranks if you plan to pursue a career in academia.

Assistant Professor : This is usually the beginning rank for many careers in academia, and is the rank of faculty members on the tenure track. Such faculty members are in a probationary period during which they must make significant accomplishments in teaching, research, and service in order to be awarded tenure.
