Blood trickled down the man’s cheek from an ugly gash on his forehead. He lifted his broadsword high above his head, locking eyes with his squirming victim, a man with a slight build, as he let out a roar of triumph.

The trickle turned to a splatter and the roar to a gurgle when an arrow lodged deep into his throat with a sickening squelch. The man stumbled back and dropped his weapon, shock written over his face. He tried to keep his balance, but a large mound of earth flew at him, hitting him like a fist, sending him sprawling to the floor.

The leader of the Amazons lowered her bow and quirked a brow as she turned to face Arfetsus.

"A punch? Really? That’s the best you could do? You are an Amazon… a warrior amongst humans."

I work with what I have, the mage answered distractedly, knowing the other woman was only teasing. Lots of earth around here. She leaned to help her fallen companion, looking him up and down. Are you alright, Bram?

Yeah, thanks, said her friend as he dusted himself and straightened. Barely have a scratch. Fool couldn’t hurt a fly if his life depended on it. He grabbed his sword from where it had fallen on the ground.

All three of the humans turned when they heard the rest of their party returning, out of breath. They had chased the other brigands into the forest. Two of the four Amazons wore wounds.

They got away? asked Inthanus.

Not in one piece, said Lamnath with a snort.
