    Tattooed on my chest is the ouroboros—a serpent eating its own tail, forming a perfect circle. Or, in my case, an incomplete circle. The tattoo, now old and faded, was never finished.

    A completed circle has no beginning and no end. To the Mexican mafia, this tattoo means you’re in la familia for life.

    I knew there would be consequences for wanting to walk away.

    They called me to the home of a Lieutenant down in Freeport, Texas. Mi padrino—the man who’d brought me into the mafia—drove me there. There were guards posted out front of the house, watching the street.

    We sat parked at the curb for a minute, not saying anything, letting everything that could have been said just hang in the air.

    Then my padrino said, Well, and he cut the engine, and my chest went flat as my lungs deflated, and he said, This is it.
