Change Your Life - Alexander Washington

    My Friend Kevin

I wrote this book because of a string of emails I received from my friend in Massachusetts. He went through a brief period of depression. However, after communicating for several months he improved tremendously. I realized that my advice helped, and I knew that there were many others who could use this advice. I am not claiming to be the man with all the answers, but I am a man who has seen a lot and could rise from mediocrity to planning and realizing some of my goals. If I can rise from the pit of binge watching anyone can!

I met Kevin while working as a childcare worker in Bedford, Massachusetts. We have been friends ever since -ten years strong. Kevin and I bonded quickly due to our interest in sports and music (Rap). Kevin was not necessarily a player, but he got a lot of looks from women.

He did not shy away from them either. It helped that he was a very athletic guy during his teen years (he played the three major sports and dabbled in track). When I just met him, you could still see muscles peeking out from the fat that layered his arms.

By 2012, however, his muscles were non-existent; he had gradually put on 70 pounds since his high school days.

I moved on from that job after two years, but Kevin stayed with the company. He was doing very well, and shortly after I left he was promoted to a supervisory position. He was flourishing, and he was living comfortably. He even managed to buy himself a four–year- old BMW.

But to my surprise in 2016, Kevin was cut from his job. I was very shocked to hear of his release as he had been working for the company for over 15 years. But I know better. The days when employers were loyal to workers are ‘long gone with the wind.’

There is no loyalty between companies and employees today. Honestly, if you can find a job that provides fringe benefits, you are winning. I’m not saying good paying jobs with wonderful benefits don’t exist, but when last have you seen one. One- year contracts are the order of the day. Most people are going to full-time jobs with freelancer benefits.

Kevin became severely depressed, and I guess I was one of the very few persons he had who would listen. He messaged me on Facebook and we had most of our conversations there.

We hear little about midlife crisis these days, but believe me when I say that it still exists. I am in my 30s and I can feel the changes. I have a youthful look so the world still treats me as if I am in my 20s but they do not hesitate to take a deep breath when I tell them I am ten years older–not cool at all but the alternative is worst.

Kevin was jobless, and he had to be dealing with aging at the same time. He was approaching 40 and all the things he had hoped for were now slipping away. My friend needed help, and I had a few suggestions. I had wasted a lot of my youth on fun and some private non-productive bad habits, but I did not waste it all. I did enough to get by in school and I was smart enough to realize that school wasn’t enough to get by in the world.

I delved into the creative online world— I have been able to
