Eui-Sun Chung Hyundai Motor Group Chairman
Hyundai Motor Group is paving the way for the future of sustainable mobility as a smart mobility solution provider
The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the first inflation in 40 years, and the uncertainty in the global financial markets have posed a major crisis for the Korean economy. However, despite these adverse conditions, Korea's automobile exports reached a record high of more than $70 billion. It ranked first among all export items amid the slump in semiconductors, leading to an improvement in exports and trade balance. In particular, the number of eco-friendly vehicles exported last year grew 31.3% year-on-year to 629,000 units and the export value grew 50.3% to $24.2 billion. Hyundai Motor Group is at the center of Korea's record-breaking automotive exports. Hyundai Motor Group, which has led the automotive industry from the front to the back of the country's economy, has set its sights on electric vehicles as the future of the automotive industry and plans to strengthen its global EV market. Last year, Hyundai Motor Group's cumulative global sales of electric vehicles exceeded 1.5 million units. It has been more than 12 years since the company introduced its first mass-produced electric vehicle, the Blue On, in 2011. The company also announced its future strategy, Hyundai Motor Way,
which states that Hyundai will respond to the pace of electrification in the market in a timely manner and secure top-tier leadership in electric vehicles. As global regulations on air pollution such as carbon emissions and fine dust are tightening, the automobile market is moving away from internal combustion engines and toward eco-friendly vehicles such as electric and hydrogen electric vehicles. We take a look at the tectonic shift in the mobility ecosystem that we must inevitably respond to, and the 'Motor Way' that Hyundai Motor Group will lead as the centerpiece of Korea's transition to future vehicles.

T
he mobility industry is undergoing a major transformation with the emergence of the future of mobility, which is characterized by autonomy, electrification, and sharing. The core technology of automobiles is shifting from mechanical to software-centered for autonomous driving, and the scope of the automotive industry is expanding beyond vehicles and parts to the convergence of communication and infrastructure and the service industry. At the same time, the supply chain value chain that makes up the automotive industry is also busy moving away from a vertical structure and establishing a horizontal structure centered on service provision. In addition to securing autonomous vehicle technology, there is fierce competition from around the world to preempt the future mobility market by testing and demonstrating new services.
Hyundai Motor Group has been more proactive than any other global company in responding to electrification and future technologies. Last year, it unveiled its mid- to long-term electrification strategy, Hyundai Motor Way, which includes a 10-year business strategy for future mobility, and is accelerating its transition to the future mobility market. The idea is to accelerate the transition to electrification based on the automotive business know-how and technological capabilities accumulated from internal combustion engine vehicles, such as the introduction of integrated modular architecture (IMA), strengthening electric vehicle production capabilities, advancing battery capabilities, and establishing an all-around value chain. We believe that electric vehicles are the fastest way to realize our transformation into a future mobility company rather than just an automaker. With a total investment of KRW 109 trillion over 10 years, about KRW 36 trillion will be invested in the electrification sector alone, and the goal is to sell 2 million EVs in the global EV market by 2030. If the EV sales target is achieved, Hyundai-Genesis' share of EV sales will rise to 18% in 2026 and 34% in 2030, up from 8% last year.
IMA is the successor to Hyundai's dedicated EV platform, E-GMP, which began operation in 2020, and Hyundai is accelerating the system's construction with the goal of completing it by the end of 2025. The second-generation dedicated EV platform based on IMA, which is an efficient production
