My name is David, and my trade is ‘Mould Maker’. Over the years, I have developed the art of making moulds for ceramics, candles, boats and other objects. I worked in several boatyards, one in Great Britain on the River Thames. My father was a ceramic technician and he had a factory where I earned a living making ceramic moulds from plaster of paris, some as large as an old television set. He rented me a workshop for two years. It is certainly possible to earn a living making moulds and this book will help you understand what is involved.

Introduction

After building a wooden boat in 1972 at the age of 16, I discovered the world of mould making and used fibreglass to start manufacturing canoes. Over the years, I built twenty-six canoes before selling the mould.

After making over 10 of them, my father introduced me to a specialist ceramic mould maker from whom I learnt the art.

For two years I ran a small business, financially supporting myself from a small workshop in Toongabbie, Sydney.

After this came the manufacture of candles and selling them at markets. I was the first person to make fibreglass candle moulds.

Many other discoveries around mould making happened after this as you will see in the last chapter. I hope you enjoy this book and I wish you luck with your mould-making endeavours.
