Your clay supplier will be able to advise you on suitable clays for extreme firings like smoke and raku. Most have an excellent selection, with some made specifically for this type of work – Ashraf Hanna’s body being one. However, the general principle is that the clay needs to have an open body that incorporates a good amount of grog. There are many you could try, Crank and T-Material are particularly good choices, but the latter can be very expensive.
