You will need:
■ Clay to make the model – smooth un-grogged
■ Water bowl, sponge
■ Wide batt – 4cm wider than the chosen width of your bowl
■ Ribs/palettes – fl exi bl e
■ Mould maker’s size (soft soap), plus brush to apply
■ Extra clay to make cottles OR old lino or wood that can be used as shuttering
■ Surform
■ Potter’s plaster, measuring jug, bucket for mixing, scales for weighing. Plaster has a use-by date and, once opened, doesn’t last very long, so make sure your plaster is fresh
■ Newspaper-lined bowl
Before you begin:
This project requires a wheel to make the model, but I am conscious that not all of you will have access to one. An alternative approach for this part of the project would be to use a shape former template made from a stiff material like MDF, acrylic or plywood (details onOR, use something like an old-style, round-bottomed wok, which can be packed with clay to the required depth and then transferred to the batt.
