Begin by making a paper template for the body of the vessel. (Note: if you don’t want to make a template, you can simply measure a slab instead, but the template is handy if you want to repeat an item to the exact dimensions.)
The dimensions of the template here are 10cm height x 60cm length. You can make yours larger or smaller to suit – the making method will be the same whatever the proportions.

Prepare a block of clay large enough to accommodate the template once rolled out.
Working on the sheet of plastic, reduce the bulk of the clay by beating it with the side of your rolling pin. Work in measured, even strokes from one side of the clay to the other, to avoid making deep grooves in the surface.
