    CHAPTER ONE

    ––––––––

    The Greatest Betrayal

Robert had a belt for Tracey, and Tracey saw Alex’s face take on a questioning look. Robert took Tracey by the waist and wrapped the belt around her, and as he did, he bent his head to hers. His crimson eyes searched hers, and against her will, she became aroused. She tried hard to fight off the attraction to him.

You are such a lovely creature. Alex is a lucky man. Now, to use these deadly spikes is quite simple, Robert said as Alex came to stand behind Tracey.

Robert, Alex said, not as a hello but more as a warning. Alex said nothing else, just nodded his head.

Watch your half-breed, Alex. Too many here would love to get their hands on her. She’s quite an attractive and delicious-looking piece. Robert then turned to Maxine. At sixty-three, Tracey can rival any creature in here, don’t you think, Maxine, he said. Maxine snapped her head around to him.

Yes, Robert, I agree, she answered, smiling sweetly.

Good. Now I have an announcement, and it is easier to blurt it out. Tracey has agreed to help us get into the compound at the prison and find Laura. She’s agreed to help destroy Marcus and his little band of traders," he said, now waiting for Alex’s reaction.

Alex grabbed Tracey’s arm, and his grip was painful, Tracey, he is out of his fucking mind. Let’s go. This is bullshit. But as Alex turned to leave with Tracey, they were attacked by a group of vampires. Tracey screamed and tried to fight them off with Alex, but they had him down, and she was with him. It took only one large female to hold Tracey back. The rest were on Alex, his growl was loud, and his actions were those of a caged animal.

His crimson eyes went from her to Robert, and then he yelled. What the hell are you doing? So, this is the way you repay my friendship, my obedience. You bastard, I’ll kill when I’m free, he hissed, straining against his captors.

Alex, calm the fuck down. Tracey has agreed to help. Robert bellowed back at him. She is one of us now and stronger than any half-breed I know. She also has special powers. I need her to do this. I want Laura back! Robert yelled.

You bastard, she belongs to me. I can’t allow anything to happen to her, he yelled.

Chain him up and watch his ass closely, Robert commanded.

Maxine got into the mix. Robert, let me go with him. He’ll come around. Alex knows we need him. I’ll help him understand that his half-breed must do as you command, she said, standing before him.

Go, and he knows that I need him. He has no choice but to get a grip, Robert said.

Tracey watched as they dragged Alex away. He almost broke free of their hold on him a few times, but they were on him and held him to the ground. The female vampire held her, and she couldn’t go to him. As they dragged Alex out, Maxine kept looking back at Tracey with a sick, vindictive smile on her beautiful face.

Then Alex yelled at her. Don’t do this, Tracey. He doesn’t give a shit about you or us. Don’t do this. Then he was struggling again with the vampires on him. Get the fuck off of me," he yelled at them and fought them, scattering them to the ground, and managed to free himself.

He stood in the middle of them, yards from Tracey and Robert. You son of a bitch, if she gets hurt, you’re a dead man. I’ll be the one to end your immortality. And as for you, Tracey, we’re done. I’m through with you. How dare you deceive me like this, you bitch. I might just kill Robert on mere principle. I want your ass alive, Tracey, so you can see me every day of your miserable little human life and see what you could have had with me. You fucking bitch, I loved you, he turned to Maxine, grabbed her, and kissed her fiercely in front of them all.

He then turned and began to fight them all again, and they managed to get him from the room. You could hear the chains rattle as they bound him up.

Robert growled, Take him down to the dungeon and make sure those chains are secure! He turned to Tracey and the female vampire that held her. Let her go.

Tracey fell to her knees in front of him. Please, let me go to him, Robert. Maybe this was a bad idea. Honestly, I’m not sure I can do this.

My dear, Tracey, you have no choice, and Alex will come around. He just needs some downtime. Now let’s go over everything. Robert said to the others in the room, who all witnessed Alex’s outburst. God damn it, I’m master here! He yelled at them. Laura’s in grave danger. I would do the same for any one of you. Alex will come around and see that Tracey is doing what she must to help. Robert then turned to Tracey.

Get up, he commanded Tracey, who was now beside herself, crying.

She got up and wanted to lunge at Robert.

Why are you doing this, and what is with that bitch, Maxine? she said, swiping at the vampires still around her.

She’s in love with him, was all he said. Now, Tracey, I need to show you how to use these spikes and what to do with the half-breed’s body. The vampire will disintegrate in a few minutes, not the half-breeds. He was about to explain when Tracey cut him off.

What do you mean she’s in love with him? she said quietly and subdued.

What don’t you understand, my love? She wants him, he said.

And how long has this been going on? she asked, her amber eyes staring into Robert’s deep crimson ones.

About two hundred years. But that’s a drop in the bucket to a vampire. She’ll get over it in time, he said.

Bastard, she hissed at him, then extended her hand and scratched his gorgeous face, not realizing her nails were sharp and hard as she drew blood. Then she felt it, the hunger, and backed away suddenly. She was surrounded by at least twenty or so vampire warriors, and they were ready to tear her apart if necessary. Robert’s hand went to his face.

I don’t blame you, Tracey. I guess he should have told you about Maxine. Alex knows she has been obsessed with him for a while. He never mentioned her? He informed her with a smug look on his face.

I hate you all, just rip my fucking head off and put me out of my misery. Alex will never trust me again, and I don’t blame him. I’ve betrayed him, and you’re a liar. I’m sick of all this. Go to hell. Go look for Laura yourself, she screamed at him.

Robert had her by the neck and off her feet so fast, and Tracey never saw him coming.

I could snap your inferior little neck right now and walk away, but for some goddamn reason, I like you, no Tracey, I more than like you. I lust after you just like that big fucking vampire of yours. And that vampire of yours will come around. He is just pissed off now. Maxine will calm him down.

He saw Tracey’s eyes widen with anger, and he then spoke to her again with his army waiting and watching.

Get over it, honey. For now, he’ll need one of his kind, and I need you to help me.

How could you let this happen? Tracey cried. I can’t believe you would betray me and him. I want to die. She cried.

Tracey, if you help me, I will turn back the clock. I will suck the vampire blood from you and give you back your humanity. You won’t be a half-breed any longer, and I can erase Alex from your mind. You can live your pathetic human life in New York City, run Breslin Publishing, and never be wiser. He will leave you be because I will demand it. He released her, and her feet touched the ground. His words were now echoing in her brain.

You can do that? she asked quietly.

Robert looked at his warriors and dismissed them. Arm yourselves, he growled to them. He saw the annoyance in some of their faces. Many were friends with Alex.

Tracey, I can do whatever I want. Just get me what I want, and I will give you what you back, my dear, your humanity. I’m sorry Alex is torn between his kind and a little half-breed like you. He should be with Maxine. She’s good for him. She can give him what he really needs.

Tracey couldn’t hold back her tears. Unfortunately, Robert spoke the truth. Alex was better off with Maxine. He deserved the bitch. In her heart, she knew no one could love Alex the way she did, but the pain was overwhelming, and she wanted it to end. I’ll do what you demand. Laura is innocent in all this. For the life of me, I have no idea why she loves you. You’re despicable.

Robert grinned, showing his large, deadly fangs. You’re still alive because I need you, Tracey. Don’t push your luck. Walk away, even hate him, but know he’ll come around and do what I need. He’s a warrior right now and will do my bidding, as will you. I need you back in New York City. Marcus has Laura in the bowels of Sing Sing. How clever of him to hold up there, Robert said.

Tracey heard Robert but didn’t care about anything he said. She saw Alex’s face as he told her he was done with her. She watched him grab the beautiful vampire and kiss her. Tracey now hurt all over, and the pain was unbearable. But she knew she would have to do what Robert demanded of her.

If he could turn the clock back, then so be it. Her heart was broken and torn to pieces after seeing Alex kiss Maxine. Tracey touched her lips. Hours before, he had kissed her, and Tracey still felt his kisses. How quickly things change and go down the shitter. She now felt empty and hollow. Nothing in the world mattered now; nothing. The one man she loved and would have given her life for no longer wanted her. She had given him her soul, and now there was a chance that Robert could get it back for her. She would do whatever it took to turn back the clock. But first, she had a mission, and she’d help Laura.

Tracey was living out an evil fairytale. Maybe this was all a nightmare. Soon, she'd wake up, be the woman she was before, and live out her lonely life on Long Island, none the wiser.

But Tracey knew this was all real because of her gift as an empath. Losing Alex was inconceivable. She would put her life in danger, save Laura, and survive. Then she’d win Alex back. Maxine didn’t stand a fucking chance. Robert was right, she was stronger than most half-breeds.

However, the thought of that bitch with Alex made her fucking crazy, but she was committed to saving Laura. No longer one hundred percent human, Tracey had to follow Robert’s orders, or she would be considered rogue and destroyed.

Tracey was sure that Alex loved her, but disobeying him cut through him, and she had a great deal to explain and make up for.

Her life had changed drastically; now, she had to help another half-breed and prove to the Elite 100 that she was indeed one of them.

I will win you back, Alex. I love you and will for eternity. There will never be another for me. My vampire, she whispered, Forever."

    CHAPTER TWO

    The Bowels of Sing Sing

Tracey never saw Alex again, and within hours, she was on a transatlantic flight back to New York. She called Kathy and told her she was on her way back and needed to have her office up and running. Tracey had to put Robert’s plan into action.

She had to convince a deranged vampire that she was worth more to them than Laura. She had to make him believe she wanted the whole lot of Robert’s clan dead.

As Tracey put her head back on the seat, she realized wanting Robert and his vampires dead wasn’t far from the truth.

The pain that Tracey felt now was overbearing. She was emotionally drained and distraught. She knew that she would never find anyone like Alex. How often do you meet a vampire and fall madly in love with him? She prayed that once Robert erased everything that had happened to her over the last three years, she could walk away and never be the wiser. Was he telling her the truth? Could he erase it all?

At this point, nothing else mattered. She’d walk into the lion’s den, do what she had to, and if Marcus didn’t fall for what she was saying, death was a better place to be than where she was.

She kept on seeing Alex in the arms of Maxine, she vividly could see him making love to her, and it sickened her. Before the flight, she threw up several times. It hurt to realize he could turn away from her after vowing his love and asking her to marry him. She had to remember that he was a vampire and was devoid of all emotion. How had he ever fallen in love with her? Tracey chalked it up to her loving him far more than she should have.

Alex probably went along with her folly of love because he was such a sexual creature. Tracey found she was his match. There was no love there. It was purely physical, sexual, and incredibly decadent. Love had nothing to do with it.

Tracey was all cried out. There wasn’t a tear left. She was numb and depressed. And yet she still loved him, adored him, and would do whatever he wanted. She’d stay with him, let him use her. She had no pride left, and she was doomed.

Robert would be her savior. If it were true that he could take away all the love and joy she had known over the last few years with Alex Breslin, she would be eternally grateful.

Kathy and Genaro waited for Tracey at JFK. Robert had called, giving Kathy a rundown of the kind of shape Tracey would be in when she landed. Kathy was upset.

Since Rio and Genaro, nothing has been the same. She was in love with a vampire and one gorgeous hunk of a man. Kathy thought, finally, Tracey would be happy. Alex Berlin was alive, and he had found Tracey.

Kathy now knew firsthand what it was like to be loved night and day by a vampire, and there was nothing to compare it to. Now, her best friend was coming home with a broken heart, and all their lives were hanging by a thread. Tracey had no idea how important her role would be in saving an ancient race.

And she was sure that Tracey had no idea Alex was beside himself with worry and had been calling Kathy hour by hour to see if she’d heard from Tracey. That didn’t seem like a man who no longer loved a woman. Maybe a stubborn, stupid ass, thought Kathy. However, it was the voice of a man who desperately loved a woman.

Kathy watched Tracey walk towards her in the terminal and thought she had never looked more beautiful. Tracey spotted Kathy and Genaro and ran to them, throwing her arms around her friend and breaking down into a mass of tears.

Tracey, it's okay, honey, we’re here, Kathy said, holding her tightly. She noticed that Genaro had moved into the crowd and was on his cell phone.

Alex, it’s me. Yes, she’s here, and she’s a mess. I mean, she’s an emotional mess. Otherwise, she looks so God damn beautiful, Genaro said.

Keep an eye on her. It will take me a few more hours to get there. Genaro, please protect her from any of our kind. She’s too distraught, and I’m sure Marcus has spies everywhere because the word is out that Tracey is looking for him. That motherfucker, Robert, made sure of that. Make sure she keeps a high profile and keep her in the public eye. Alex said.
