Chapter One
Iwill never forget that day! Mr. Tysmens found me on the street running. I could smell the ice cream. I did not know Mrs. Pattello had open the ice cream shop up the street. The sound of the motor of the freezer sounded as if God was growling at me. Mom did the best she could. I was a handful. Dad was stationed in Iraq or Tokyo, I can’t remember. I know it wasn’t too long after he returned to take us to Alexandria, Virginia. Dad was stationed there for four years. When I would get the anxiety that Dad was going to have to leave in the middle of the night, Dad would say, This is a special assignment, Leyton. I am not going nowhere right now.
It was hard! I began to believe him and enjoy it. I lost contact with a few friends throughout the years. Some I am blessed to find now that I am in the military. It is different and special that I have my own family. A lot of decisions my dad made when I was a kid, I understand them now why he made each decision. I don’t know how him and mom did it. I was the kid that constantly in something or doing something, and pulling at their shirt or hand to get their attention. In my head, I hear my son, but I sigh in answering him. Now, that he is fourteen, I am still wanting to know where do this energy come from? I paused. We are out to eat. We are having some father and son time. We are here at Mrs. Pattello’s ice cream shop. The name has changed since her children has taken over. It is called Pattello’s Pub and Creamery
. The best ice cream and burgers in the area. The waitress puts our food on the table. I had him to wait until he finished his food. This buys me some time for me telling L.J. the story of Mr. Tysmens and I. The time was over. L.J.’s food was gone so quick, I checked to see if he chewed and swallowed. I was still eating my food. L.J. waited so nicely to let me finish my food in peace. Then, I hear this.
Dad, tell me the story,
said L.J.
"Son, you have heard this story for how many times.
Yes, but today is going to be more special because I am in the actual place where it takes place.
Alright, L.J.,
I chuckled.
Here is the story, I could smell the sweet fragrance of my all-time favorite strawberry ice cream. How could this be? I ran down the street looking and praying. I heard a sound that made me think Jesus was growling at me. Oh! The smell was getting stronger. I must be getting closer. I didn’t see Mr. Tysmens drive up beside me while I was running.
Leyton, Leyton, Leyton!
yelled Mr. Tysmens. Where are you running too? What are you thinking about?
Mr. Tysmens, I smell that sweet fragrance,
I replied.
"Oh! son. I know what it is. Mrs.
