I have mixed feelings about this one, the last book in the series. For a comic that charmed me as a boy with its nostalgic and simple stories and humor, "The Married Life" has been becoming steadily darker and more complex, with multi-billion dollar plots, shootings, angst and tragedy, even a science fiction trip joining the two worlds of Archie for a time. But at least all the loose ends (well, most of them) got resolved before the final chapter, and the death of Archie. This chapter, as unlikely as it seems to me for Archie to die violently in a moment of heroic sacrifice, was done well and honored the essence of a character I've become fond of over the last 50 years. I also like how the "2 worlds" concept was ignored for this final chapter; no double portrayal of Archie meeting his end in two worlds, leaving two different grieving widows. There is also a nicely done epilogue showing some episodes from Archie's past that show something of his character, all too rarely explored in the comics. The epilogue segues into a "one year later" story that does a fine job of assuring us that Archie's spirit lives on in Riverdale, in more ways than one. A touching conclusion that made me tear up, but I'll be glad to get back to the Archie of Riverdale High School I grew up with.
