    CHAPTER ONE

    New York City.  1977.

    When somebody knocks on your door at one in the morning, it’s either a pizza delivery guy who forgot his glasses; or the precursor to the spark of a perfectly, understandable panic attack.

    Thump, thump, thump!

    I rolled out of bed, strapped on my shoulder holster, hello, Mr. Browning, slid into my Han and Chewie t-shirt, trotted over to the front door of my Queens one bedroom apartment, stubbed my toe—that’s an eye-opener—all the while, taking deep breaths to keep my heart from beating itself to death.

    When we’re suddenly faced with an unknown, why is our kneejerk reaction always a negative?

    Or is it just me?

    I looked out my peek-hole.

    There was a woman in her mid-twenties, my age, standing in the hallway.

    Her hair was done up cinnamon bun-style, just like Princess Leia, how adorable and her t-shirt had an iron-on patch of Princess Leia, wearing that white dress, blaster at the ready.

    She was sweet and petite and the pounding of my heart changed tracks, so to speak.

    I opened my seven deadlocks.

    It’s not paranoia when there really are people who don’t just think about killing you; they intend to kill you.

    Were you asleep?

    Kryptonians don’t require sleep.

    Oh, my God!  You’re a nerd, like me.  I’m Lynn Hacker.

    We shook hands.
